I had a natural birth. They gave me a pain killer when I was dilated to 6 about 3 hours before giving birth, so when it came time to push, I was all by myself, but that's how I wanted to do it. I didn't find it to be very painful until I ripped of course. Just remember if u think you can handle it you can. Goodluck..

I used only natural pain relief - combination of aromatherapy, massage & pressure points during, homeopathics pre and after, waterbirth (which cut the pain in half as soon as i hopd in the water!) and of course i ate really well during the pregnency and got heaps of exercise - birth is generally much shorter and less painfull if you are fit and healthy (long distance walking is really important in last months to get baby into right position) and i drank raspberry leaf tea during pregnency which is a tonic for the uterus. Id definatly reccomend natural birthing, you want to avoid using thoes harsh drugs if you possibly can, they can seriously muck around with you and the baby.

With an epidrual there is usually an opioid like morphine or combined with an anesthetic like bupivicaine. But what I think is most important is understanding what an epidural can do to the labor process. It definitely slows things down and if it gets too slow, they may want to augment your labor with other meds like Pitocin. Of course, Pitocin will make the contractions harder so you may need more epidural medication. This cycle can go back and forth and cause undue stress to your baby and is why many women end up with cesarean births. If you want to birth naturally, make the commitment and prepare yourself because it IS a pain like no other! I wish I had done bradley or hypnobirthing but I did hire a doula who was indispensable during my natural birth. Good luck!

i recommend a bradley birthing class- it's alittle more expensive and a few weeks more than traditional lamaze class but they will look at each birthing method and each drug used. you really get a good idea of all pros and cons of every option and walk away feeling prepared to make the right choice for you!
