My daughter's school has the Sept 30th cut off date but she is in the school for Prek and speech so it should be aok. They said that she has to have speech because she mixes up some word sounds like her PH ans F's. So some words are funny sounding but ya know what they are. I singed off because I thought it would be better to fix it now then too wait. She was so mad. She knows her ABCs, 123s, Colors, Shapes, can write and spell her own name, mine some other family member names, and a few other daily used words and can read beginer books like "Fat Cat Sat on a Mat" and the Pup and Pop books. Her teacher this year is so nice and has been teaching for over 20 years! I can't wait until the 7th when school starts because she has been asking me for over a month to go back to school. :)

My daughter, Cora, was born in November. She is past the deadline for IL. It is a shame because she is so ready. I can't get her into preshool because we work in a town 25 minutes away and we can't provide transportation. It sucks that she has to wait another year.

My son is also going to kindergarten in the fall. He is super excited! We live in Northern California where the cut-off is December 1st. He will be continuing at the same school where he attended full day pre-k program. They actually pulled him to go to the kindergarten class daily for math and reading. It is has worked out great as each class has 3 tiers based on ability for each grade level. He finished pre-k at mid level for the kindegarten class... and had a great time there. We're looking forward to the fall. School is k-12 college prep/ IB.

Hey, you don't need to defend your choice to me, or anyone else for that matter. Your kids, your choice. I responded to the entire conversation as a whole, not just what you said.

I live in Sask, Canada and the cutoff is 4 by Dec31, my twins will be 5 Nov 16, but as I said one of them just isn't socially ready, so they'll do another year of Pre-K, doesn't bother them, they just like going, doesnt matter to them if it's another year of Pre-k

Well, I live in BC, Canada, and the rule is they have to have their 5th bday by Dec. 31st, and they can start in September. If they were born in 2005, they can start kindergarten in the fall of 2010, that's how it works here. My son is starting kindergarten this fall, his 5th bday will be on Novemeber 30th. We went to his kindergarten orientation last week, and he couldn't be more excited to start school! All the teachers and staff there were so impressed with how smart he is; made me a proud mama! ^_^ I'm not entirely sure which one of us is more excited about him starting school! Lol

My husband and I have decided not to send them to kindergaten this year, I have twin boys, one of them is slightly delayed in speech and language, and had eye surgery last summer to remove cataracts in both eyes, because oof these delays we've decided to wait a year, the speech path noted that would be a good choice as well as the child psychologist. They both recommended not separating them, so we wont!

I wish my son could go next year, but he cannot :( Not sure when the cutoff for our district is, but my son is past the deadline. And since he began his school career as a special needs preschool student ( for speech) 2 years ago, they will not even consider testing him. This bothers me because I know he is academically ready--he is reading on a late kindergarten/1st grade level and doing simple math. He also knows his colors and shapes.
the good part of this is that his IEP doesn't expire until he turns 6...so he is guaranteed a spot in the special needs preschool for next school year. Hopefully he will get a good teacher who will give him work to challenge him. By kindergarten, I assume they will be pulling him out for enrichment activities while the rest of the class is learning the alphabet...

Where I live (Ontario, Canada) kids generally start school at 4 in a junior kindergarten program. Kids have to be 4 by Dec. 31st so my daughter started school at 3.

I'm in MI too and my son will be starting Kindergarten in the fall. I am very happy with the progress he has made socially in Pre-K and he can't wait to go to "big" school. I believe you have to look at your child's emotional maturity and make the best decision based on your child's abilities. Each child is so different.

I have been a certified teacher for over 7 years but still have not gotten my teaching job. Here in S. TX there are more teachers than there are jobs or in my area (city & concentration) and am of two minds when it comes to sending the kids early. Since I don't have my own class and am only going on past experiences (i.e. Student Teaching & Substituting for over 15 years. Some do well others do not... it would be nice to have a trial period for them and then decide. If possible, a full time pre-k @ k level during summer to see if they can "cut the mustard" so to speak... kinda like bootcamp for kindergarten. I was a young 5 (August bday) and I loved school but of course K back then was only 1/2 day... you can still find some 1/2 day programs but not sure if theyre prevalent now with a usual 2 working parent household.
I think mine would benefit from Kinder early but then again she might not thrive and begin to hate school if others were way ahead of her but I have been told by other professional educators that she is bright but that's not all that is needed as others have said the maturity has to be there too.
Hope everyone who's sending their 4 year old to K has all the success in the world and I wish I could send mine early but am of two minds when I wonder about the disadvantages of sending them too early.

My daughter is also starting in the fall. We're in NY and the cutoff here is Dec 1 also...If she was born on her due date, she would have had to wait another year, but she came a little early, so she gets to go this year! I'm really glad actually, she is more than ready for it and doing great so far in pre K and can't wait for Kindergarten...

Hi Jackie!
I am so nervous about that! My son Terrill was 2 months premature, and I'm questioning if he is ready for kindergarten. He has some speech delays, and isn't grasping colors, numbers, and ABC's as quickly as I believe he should. Nevertheless, I am going to give it a try ; )

I am not starting my son. He is the first born and although academically he is already at a kindergarten level, his maturity is not there. I also live in California right now and I don't like that the cut off is so late! Plus the district that I live in has had so many cuts that the kindergarten classes are going to be a 38 to 1 ratio. I am a teacher and I have seen many kids start at 4 yrs. and they are always the ones struggling and the baby's of the class. I would rather my kid be the oldest than the youngest. Especially now a days that they expect so much from these kids. I work with my son all the time and I would advise any parent who has a late birthday child to work with them as much as they can during that extra year at home! just 15 minutes a day can make a world of difference!

Christina Im not sure what part of Alabama you live in but we live in Alabama. Some Private schools do have a K-3, K-4 and K-5 program. My daughter attended the K-3 program last year (most of you probably considered K-3 and K-4 Preschool) So there are some places that do have some kind of program here. Best of luck.

I agree with you Connie, we need to move out west! In Alabama you cant start unless you are 5 when the school year starts. : ( My son is so ready! He asks me all the time when he is gonna get to start school.
