My daughter attends Montessori school Kindergarten for almost a year now, she is ready to read chapter books. And also she is the youngest one in the kindergarten program, although there are mixed ages kids in her class.

I will let her to start first grade this fall. Her teacher said she has no social problems, couldn't tell she is younger than others.

I am hoping I made the right decision for her, normally what level that Kindergarten kids should read? How many of moms here let your kids go to first grade this fall?

I am actually kind of nervous of making this decision.

I have five kids and a current first grader. First grade is one of those grade where the variation in reading ability is HUGE. I remember going into the class room and being amazed that some kids are having a hard time getting through Hop on Pop and some are reading Magic Tree House books. My 6 year old who is finishing up first grade can read chapter books but would rather read picture books because they hold her interest better. I really do not think reading ability should be a factor in deciding to advance to first grade.

My son is in first grade also and reads at a 4th grade level so far. We encourage him to read every day and try more challenging books as he progresses naturally.

Hello, my son is currently in first grade and he loves it! He is doing very well and is also reading chapter books. I believe you should want to constantly enrich your child's educational opportunities. It great as long as there is no pressure felt by my son to achieve. He just keeps trying to do his best and his best gets better everyday!

Reading is reading, length is not important, comprehension and retention are much more important. If she understands what she's reading then she is ready to move up.

I guess I didn't make it clear, I have seen some kids that older than her in her class already finished charter books, that makes me wonder if she is good enough to start first grade this fall.

Or just those kids are very advanced, so my kid is normal.

What do you mean how much should they be able to read? By the end of kindergarten they should know how to read. If that means chapter books then so be it. It's perfectly normal from what I've seen. I don't think I'm really understanding your question though.
