My son is just shy of 4 he has recently become a bit obsessed with his penis. If he gets hard he insists on playing with it. we have told him its not nice to do that in the living room but he is just not getting it yet. Any ideas?

I have told my 4 year old son that it's private time when he's in his bedroom. So he washes his hands before and after and it's solved the problem.

I have two girls so don't have any experience in this area but I've read that it's important to explain that it's not wrong or dirty but only something they should do in private. This way they will understand that there are certain social rules which we have to follow in life (if an adult plays with his penis in public he will be arrested!) but it also protects them against abuse as they will know that it is wrong if someone else touches them there. It's important not to make them feel ashamed or dirty though as this will affect the development of their sexual identity. The "obsession" is a perfectly natural part of growing up but can make us feel uncomfortable as we don't have their innocence! Good luck I wouldn't like to be in your shoes in this problem!
