My daughter just turned four, associating flags with different things will help. Like my daughter knows that when the national anthem plays you stand with your hand on your heart and look at the flag she under stands that it is the US flag. she knows the state flag and notices when we go to different states that it looks different but other wise just show them different flags and tell them thing about that country. My daughter know that she was born in the UK and flag and can sometimes pick it out when she sees it on a map but not always. I guess teach them the same way you teach numbers and letters show it to them, describe it and tell them things about the place it represents.
