In Home Childcare vs. State Regulated Daycare

We currently have my 2 1/2 year old daughter in a State regulated daycare, she has been there since 3 months old. We LOVE it there, but it costs so much! With #2 coming in August, it will bump our daycare costs to $147 a week.

If we move them to a in home childcare provider, who we pay under the table, has great references then we could save close to $250 a month.

Should I be more worried about saving money or keeping my children in a "educational" based daycare center where she learns, has more 1:1 attention and it is state regulated? I need help making my choice and my husband is for saving money...as I am too, but still have doubts.

I believe it is finding the right person. We have never been to a state regulated daycare. I have always taken my 2 1/2 year-old to a home daycare. I know all parents say there child is so smart but she really challenges the kids in a positive way. My daycare provider will be starting a preschool program this fall for all the kids who are not in school. She even involves the kids that are as young as 1. She included my son when he was one as well.

I totally agree with the post before mine. I too have worked in state daycares and the things that go on in them are horrible. I currently run an in-home daycare out of my house. I think children get more one on one time this way, and learn more. One child I have her was in a daycare and is a special needs child and they did nothing to help progress her in her development. I've had her here 3 weeks and she can now not only crawl, but walk and bend over without falling, kick a ball and so on.... its all in finding the right person and situation for your family. Good luck and best wishes!!

Hello Kelly,

First I just want to say, my heart goes out to you! I completely know what your going through and although I don't have advice on your situation at this time, I do have a few fact and personal experiences behind this post.

As a parent, I am a Stay @ Home Mommy and work from home. I choose this for many reasons. Here's the thing: For about 6 months I worked for a "State Regulated Daycare" and to be perfectly honest with you. As an assistant teacher I witnessed many things that were not "state regulated". I became such a problem to the daycare because I wasn't doing what they wanted me to do - which was to keep quiet about what I witnessed. So they gave me the option of being fired or putting in my two weeks. I put in my two weeks. Some of the things that were EXTREMELY DISTURBING which I witnessed and Had to put a stop to were:

1. Children pulling their pants down and pretending to do adult things with one another.

2. Children being physically & forcefully made to lay down during nap time.

3. Children being in contact with dirty diapers as well as no hand washing there-after.

4. Children slipping/cracking their heads open and parents being lied to about how the incidents took place.

5. Children being ridiculed because they did not go potty in the toilet - but instead on themselves (3 yr olds)

6. Children being pinched - then later given candy to not tell their parents

7. A Child trying to suffocate another child because their toy was taken away- teacher was not paying attention (too busy chatting with another teacher gossiping)

8. Teacher not washing hands after soiled diaper changes and then feeding.

9. Directors notifying teachers quickly before parents get to the class room. (this was done so that specific child was cleaned up and appeared ready when parent arrived)

10. NEED I SAY MORE???

All of the incidents were on a non recorded video, however because teachers knew their was no audio to hear as well as there were certain areas in the rooms which video was not able to tape - they would move to those places to discipline.

Obviously I had a lot of complaints as a teacher and a parent, however the directors only cared about the dollars they were ranking in - per child. I have since quit and removed my daughter and son from those Daycares. The main reason for writing this was to show and help parents acknowledge the awful truth about "State Regulated Daycares" - No One is better than the other (There are many people who have issues, yet still have licenses to care for children) Mainly because they have never been caught. So, would I choose a home daycare or state regulated one? NO, neither would be good enough to leave my child with. ALL THE ABOVE INFO IS FACT: My answer about being a stay @ home mommy to avoid all the craziness this world has to offer is Opinion.

Good Luck & God Bless You Choice.
