Sleep

[deleted account] ( 7 moms have responded )

How long do your babies sleep at night and how many naps do they take, and how long? My son is a year and sleeps through the night. He's asleep at 8pm sharp, but will wake up anywhere between 5am and 7am and is wide awake. At home, he takes 2 naps, anywhere from 45 mins to an hour and 15 minutes, mid to late morning and then early afternoon. At daycare, he takes one mid day nap for about 2 hours. They've tried to do the morning nap and he refuses, he's too into what's going on. At home, he gets so tired, I can't keep him awake until mid day, especially if he's been up really early. There just doesn't seem to be any method to his madness. I just want to make sure he's getting enough sleep. Thanks.

total sleep for this age they need 14 hours. They need 14 hours or so over a 24 hour period a day until they hit about 3-4 years when it goes down to 12 hours. They continue to need 12 hours of sleep per night until they get to about 8-10 years of age when it will drop to 10 hours. Then at about 13-14 it goes to the adult amount of 8 hours. So if your little one is sleeping 12 hours a day plus 1-2 naps- that's pretty normal. at about 18 months, the nap will switch to a more common afternoon nap that's longer. Now it still may be disorganized- as what he's demonstrating.
my son goes to bed at 730pm or 8pm and wakes up to nurse between 5-7am. If he wakes up at 5/6am he will go back to sleep. but if he wakes up closer to 7am, its harder to get him to go back to bed. If he wakes up early, he always needs two naps during the day. Otherwise he has one hour or so nap around 11am and another in the afternoon. Babies have a sleep cycle- they are awake for 90 min at a time before they get tired again. They will have a 15-30 min window for you to get them down for a nap. If the window is missed, they will go into another wake cycle. I was told this by another mom who read it in a book. It made sense for my son! when i started to note his cycles, his napping got a lot more organized, he was less tired. Also, if baby misses his naps during the day, he will wake up more at night. The quality of day naps determines night time sleeping as they will wake up more if they are over tired.

Hello there, My daughter has one nap around mid morning for 2 hours and then she goes to bed between 7:30 and 8:00 and wakes up between 7 and 8 in the morning. I think that he is getting plenty of sleep. We are lucky that our kids even sleep through the night.

Sounds like my son too only he is up at 5am every morning!!!! He sleeps for 12-13 hours in total each day with about 10 hours through the night. I think we are all doing okay with the sleeping :)

Sounds like we're all about the same as far as sleep. My little guy goes to bed about 7:30 or 8 & is pretty done for the whole night. He is down to taking one nap during the day for about 2 hours.

my son goes to bed at 7pm and is up between 6-7am. Daddy gets up at 6am so I think that usually wakes him up. We get up at 7 am and then he goes down for morn nap at 9am. He sleeps anywhere from 45 min- an 2 hours. He has anafternoon nap at 1pm and there again that can range from 45min- 2 hours. Then hes up again and goes to bed for the night at 7pm. If we are away or it's the weekend then he usually skips a nap because there's to much going on. He sleeps through the night great. I think your little one is fine on sleep.

From what you described he's getting all the sleep he needs, especially if he sleeps through the night. It just looks like you have a morning baby!

I wouldn't worry about it as long as he's sleeping through the night. My 1 year old goes to bed at 8pm but she doesn't wake any earlier than 7am. She takes 2 naps during the day very similar to your son's naps but pretty soon we're switching her over to just one nap because she is starting to fight her 2nd nap. They are the best source of information when it comes to how they feel or what they want. He'll tell you if he isn't getting enough sleep.
