Weaning?

Our daughter will be 1 on November 29. In large part because we've been pretty passive with her, she's still on about 6 6oz. bottles a day. I know the recommended time for weaning from the bottle is between 12 - 18 months... I'm curious if any of you have begun / completed the gradual process, and how you did it?

The biggest complication is that our daughter doesn't drink real well from a sippy cup. She's had one for a long time and that's the only way we give her water or juice, she CAN drink from it, but she usually just uses it as a toy.

Thanks for the good advice... some of my greatest worries are the last two touched upon -- soon my daughter will be moving to the toddler room in daycare, where they don't give her a bottle... the people are real nice and promised to help give her a bottle till she adjusted, but it can't go on forever... right now, she only falls asleep with a bottle, and so the lack of bottles at daycare has led to a tired, thirsty baby when she gets home... and that's still with 1-2 bottles at daycare!

Charity, I'm still nursing. Grant gets 2-3 bottles a day of pumped milk. Is there a time when you're "supposed" to wean or just let the child wean themselves? Grant LOVES nursing, I'm scared he'll be 4 wanting to nurse still...or have to nurse to go to sleep.

So am I in the minority cause my little guy is still nursing? But he stopped taking bottles at daycare at 7 months.

I started weaning my daughter at 9 months and she did fine. I got some of those Nuby sippy cup (with no handles) and my lil girl uses it as a toy AND a weapon :). when i decided to take her off the bottle i did just that i got rid of all her bottle and she only drunk from that sippy cup. we had a rough start but it only took her a couple of tries to get it right. she will be one on the 29 and we have began to give her a regular cup...ill let u know how that goes when i finish getting this juice off the floor.

Hi Amy, my daughter just turned 1 on the 8th and the next day after reading in "what to expect the first year" I started weaning her off of the bottle the following day. We started one meal a day back when she was 9 months, giving her a little food (stage 2). She didn't know either how to drink from a sippy cup, my husband and I had to drink from it ourselves and then give it to her, do it again and repeat the game a few times. She finally realized how to do it from watching us. Now she eats stage 3 for all her meals, but her night time formula we put in a sippy cup instead of the bottle. It has only been a few days and she is off the bottle now. I will tell you, it is harder to pack up and run errands now that she is not on the bottle. It was so much easier to bring a bottle with water and formula, then now to carry jars of baby food, a sippy cup, spoons and on and on. Good luck with it.
