If you would like to have a VBAC then give it a go. I would advise having a doula that you have a good relationship with, to negate any anxiety or fears that might arise on the day which could interfere with the progress of your labour. Good luck!

If you are healthy and you had a low transverse incision there are relatively few additional risks to having a VBAC. In these matters I usually advise talking to your provider in depth about your personal situation and if there is anything specific to you that makes VBAC higher risk for you. If you want to do it though and your provider seems skeptical, by all means consult a couple different drs. and see what they have to say. Good Luck!

All of mine were different. I had an OB, Induction, Epidural and C-Section with my first in December 1995. In January 2006, I had a midwife, 5 hours of labor at home, 4 in the hospital, no drugs and a natural delivery without problem. My 3rd was November 2008 with a midwife, an epidural and natural. If I had to choose, I would do the 2nd birth all three times. lol. You will be monitored no matter what you do because of the 1st C-Section. They even monitored me with 10 years between the birth of 1 and 2. Personally, I would try for natural, but be prepared for anything.

I would advice you to get more information of your first labour.was it prolonged due to CPD or what? If the passage was small ,I would advice you to go for C-section because the second baby is always bigger than the first baby...all the best anyway.

My 1st child I delivered naturally but my 2nd child I ended up having a c-section. The c-section eas after a long labour and induction. When I was pregnant with my 3rd child I decided that if I went in labour naturally I would deliver naturally but if I had to be induced again that I will have the c-section. But it is your choice. One thing I thought of was if I would end up having a c-section anyways why go through the labour process.

Like you I had an emergency c-section the first time and would love to have a VBAC for the next. In my case that isn't advisable due to some extra health risks for me. I was lucky enough to have a doctor who was willing to explain the risk factors to help me in my decision. I was also advised by other medical professionals to check out ICAN and I can say that it is a very supportive site and information center for women. There are a lot of personal things for you to consider and ICAN may help you to figure out what is best for you. You might be able to attend an informational meeting in your area. Also, ask your doctor to explain what risks are likely for you and your baby based on your medical history and current heath. I wish you good luck and good health.

Okay, well, to some, 30 hours of labour is not at all bad. Sounds like you had a lot of unnecessary hospital intervention. Some babies don't need to be rushed out bit let nature take it's course. It is certainly fine to have a natural birth after Csection as long as your incisions are horizontal and not vertical. My suggestion to you is to get a midwife and have a home birth or at a birthing center. You will be allowed to be in control of YOUR experience and not have to make it an experience that everyone else is in control of. Even in a hospital, a midwife is the very best advocate to make all your desires become a reality. Congratulations and good luck!

ican.org (i believe, maybe ,com) is a great site for learning about Vaginal Birth After Cesarean (VBAC). It is (usually) safe, as the risk of uterine rupture after csec is only like .05% higher than a regular vaginal birth. You have to find a supportive OB/midwife who will be there for you, but your body is MADE for labor and birth, and can usually get there without any help on its own. Inductions actually increase chances of csec, so def no inductions with #2 if you are serious about it! good luck, you CAN do it!

I am with you Vikki! I had the epidural and have NO regrets! I had to push for almost two hours and that epi gave me the hours rest that gave me the strength to hang in there! I am in awe of women that do it drug free...I am sure that for them it is the right decision. But I decided after my c-section that giving birth made me a hero...how she came into this world did NOT diminish the amazing thing that childbirth is. A woman should never be belittled for the decisions that she makes while delivering her child. The process is a miracle and EVERY woman and EVERY situation is so different!

My little sister gave birth to two children before I had my first. She used no drugs and had quick labors. I always thought "well if she can, so can I!" I was wrong! My first child was born by emergency section after 4 days of labor and preeclempsia! It took a while for me to realize that comparing my self to her was ridiculous!. Now I know that we are all made differently and comparison is wrong! I have two beautiful girls with very different birth stories...and I am a hero :-)

Blessings to ALL women on the journey of childbirth!

Good luck Jessica I think u made the right choice for u, if the docs n midwifes said go for it than they must feel its safe for u to try:) Just stay positive hun and believe in yourself. My advice is try stay active n try different positions when in labour, that will help deliver the baby normally, n hopefully will make labour quicker. If u need to talk I'm here and u can msg me anytime. All the best:)

"Go for the c-section again! Its not as good in the first few days but it is safe. Why should you risk to tear your uterus? Just to end up having an episiotomy? That really hurts too and mine took 18 months to REALLY heal. People tend to idolize natural birth at home with no anesthesia but what really matters is the health and safety of both baby and mother."

umm wow seriously? you must not know your facts. Uterine rupture chances in a vbac patient are extremely small...about the same chance a woman who isnt even trying to vbac has. And even still the cases that it becomes an issue are even smaller. The risks of putting yourself back on the table are higher than having even a medicated vbac. Who said she didnt want any pain relief...if she does who cares her choice. Healing wise a tear or episiotomy is way less an issue then the huge cut they do through your organs and your belly. A c/s is not glam its a huge deal...its a major surgery w/many risks. Dealing w/ another child post rcs vs post vbac are hugely different.

go with natural or at least try. its much better for you and the recovery time is much shorter so you will be able to enjoy your new little one without worrying what you can and cant do whilst recovering.i didnt have a c section myself and my labour was very straight forward NO PAIN RELIF!! can you tell im proud lol.but my friend had her first through c section, she was in the same position as you,she had a very hard time and decided to go for a c section for her second but it didnt quite work out that way! the baby came a week before her c section date and she was in labour for HALF AND HOUR!! she said it was so much easier, yes labour hurts but its amazing what you can do once the babys here without worrying your gunna break a stitch. do what you feel is right for you xx

I had a c section with my son after 2 days of labor and over an hour of pushing before they decided that his head was just too big and he was face up. It was just not a good experience all around and I am worried that if I try a natural birth the second time around I might have the same problem. I am leaning toward the schedule section for my next one just because I don't want to have the pain and exhaustion from labor on top of a surgery again. We will see when the time comes but right now I would have to travel an hour to a hospital that will do a VBAC anyway. So the decision may be made for me in that fact...Good luck.

It really depends on why you had to have a c-section? If it was because the baby was tired and thought for safety reasons to do a c section then I would try again for natural. If it was because you had a physical problem to give birth naturally then go for the c section. Personally having had both I would want a natural birth as you recover within a few days and can carry on with caring for your baby within a few hours rather than being in pain and stuck in bed. I would never recomend a c section because it just takes away the joy of having a new baby when you are doped up on pain killers. Go natural it is a great experience if you can but at the end of the day listen to the doctors advice and go with the flow. x

Hi Jessica,
I had a 23hr labour with my first and it ended up and emergency c-section. I had talked to my doctors about having a natural with me second and in my case they advised me not too as i have a small pelvis and cannot deliver children naturally. But i also have a friend who done a VBAC and she was successful at it. I would really look into it and ask lots of questions about why your first was so difficult.

I had my 1st naturally and my 2nd was a c-section. I didn't like the recovery time, given I already had another child to care for. We're talking about #3 right now and I would really like this one to be a natural birth. My OB has a policy that they will not do a VBAC, so I'll have to switch doctors. But it will be worth it. Just personal preference, mind you, but the more I think about it the more important it is that I try to have this baby on my own. There's my two cents. :D

I think that if there r no medical reasons or complications then attempting Vbac is not a bad idea. U never know how this next time would be unless u trust urself n have a positive mind frame n give yourself a chance. U might be successful n save urself anothe c-section. Vbac's are usually successful if u have only had 1 previous section. If u join the VBAC community on here u will be able to talk to other women who have had the same question as yourself, their fears n successes. It is a great support group.

Definetly talk to ur doctor understand the advantages n disadvantages to both to make the best decision for u n baby. I wish u all the best with it, be positive:)

I have a friend that has delivered natural, c-section, and then 3 natural births at home. Like everyone else has said, you make the decision that is best for you and that you are comfortable with after consulting your dr. Lots of dr's are very uncomfortable doing vbacs, but there are more and more that are willing to.

I think you should do what's best for your body and you and the baby as you don't want to be exhausted and in pain from the labour when you have a new born and an 18month old to look after! No one gives you a medal or a pat on the back when your leaving! I think you need to make the right decision for your body and your baby's! and if that is having a c- section then so be it or if it is having a natural birth again then so be it! I wish you the best of luck with the birth of your new baby and hope that you both don't have such an ordeal as your last baby good luck!

I have an 18 month old and I also had to have a c section after a long complicated labour. I now have a 7 month old too and I gave birth to him naturally. The doctors did say i mite have to have a c section again but I really wanted to try to deliver him natural first. As long as your scar has completely healed and you havent had problems with it there should be no reason why you cant do it natural. There is a low risk of the scar tearing because of the pressure but that doesnt happen very often! They monitor and continually check your scar throughout the delivery. Hope this helps x

I went in planning for either. I had a planned section date but if she came earlier, I was ready to go natural! Baby number 2 arrived 13 minutes after we were supposed to arrive at the hospital for the section by natural childbirth. It was a wonderful experience. That said...my girls are 5 years apart and there was little risk with that healing time for a uterine rupture. I would discuss it with your doctor or midwife and try if that is what you desire. Good luck! :-) and Blessings!

I agree with Crystal. I had my second child via C-section (not by choice either) I was determined to have my third child naturally, however my labour didn't progress and I had to have a 2nd c-section. Since I had already had a c-sec I knew what I was in for so it wasn't as daunting as the 1st. I then went on to have a 4th child and by that stage I had no choice but to have a c-section as they wouldn't allow me to even try and have a labour.
At the end of the day it is ultimately your decision!! Good luck :)

I am a doula and was just at the birth of a beautiful baby boy whose mothers first birth was a c-section.
The birth was completley un-medicated and the mom did so fantastic. Never was she in any danger.
The concern of a VBAC (Vaginal birth after caesarean) Is of the uterus rupturing. Sounds scary and yes it is, however it is not common among healthy pregnancies.
The more time you have between pregnancies the better. (This mama has a 20 month baby girl)
The best advice is the advice that your family dr gives you as he knows you.
Also, go with what you want to! It is your decision. It is what you feel most comfortable with. Do not let anyone make those decisions for you, whether it be a scheduled Csection or a natural birth :)

Lots of women have a natural delivery after a c-section, get all the info you can and then make the decision that is right for you. Sections are harder to recover from especially when you have already got a little one to look after. Consultants will always offer a section, but they should accept your decision.
Good luck

My son also had a bad start with a c-section as well and we are planning another. I would try for natural only if you feel your body and the baby could handle it. Don't put pressure on your self c-section is always a option if things don't work out.

I don't know what your medical history is like, so I'd consult your midwife or doctor. A lot of practitioners, I find, tend to say no to a natural birth after a cesarian -but if you're healthy and want to try it naturally, then I say go for it.
