We are going to adelaide from townsville on the 26th Dec - its a 38 hr drive and nearly 3700 kms, we have to drive as its going to cost near 1500 in flights, You have to pay full fare prices for children over 2 and lucas turned 2 a month ago.

Do you think we are crazy for doing such a long drive? We want to drive at night but road conditions mean we have to go inland way through Mount isa and Alice springs.....and night driving in the outback is dangerous and downright dreadly witht he kangaroos etc.

Does anyone have any tips for long haul drives with toddlers???

well I have never been on the road that long but I did go on a four hour drive with a one and two year old. Make sure to let him pack a bag of his toys that he can play with on the road . this was the best thing I did. also bring plenty of snacks.

It is recommended that you do not keep a child in a car seat for longer than 4 hour periods. So take frequent stops so that he can stretch his legs and get his circulation going again. Take a ball he can kick about when out of the car. I took my son to Germany from England and that took 12 hours which seemed like forever but he was very good sleeping most of the time and reading a book. May be you could hire an in car dvd player and screen. I am lucky and have one in built in my car and it was a Gods send when we drove to Edinburgh with my 22 month old this was an 11 hour drive. She slept and then we stopped, watched a Mickey Mouse film then we stopped, played with her toys and books and looked out the window and then watched Sesame street. There was no problems at all. We stopped when we felt she needed to get out and stretch and really took the lead from her. I think this is a mamoth trip you are taking on just try and make the drive part of your holiday stopping frequently and resting when you can.

how is lucas in the car now , if he is good i wouldn't worry to much. when traveling try to stop in a park or somewhere where he can run around and play with him for 10-15 min or longer. and have lots of snacks to eat. good luck and safe travels,( i'm from queensland)
