Afraid of "The Man"

My little Joshy is starting to have nightmares about "The Man", he can't tell me anything about it but this. He calls any man he doesn't know "The Man" and when we are shopping we say things like "You can't touch that it belongs to "The Man" " or "We need to pay "The Man" for that now" he doesn't go to daycare, and only stays with people he knows and can name, so he's not mean a man in his life, it's someone he doesn't know. I'm just wondering if having a fear of this nameless man is normal, is anyone elses 2 year old doing this? Thanks

thanks everyone, his nightmares have subsided, and he doesn't talk about the man any more. i'm still not sure who this nameless man was meant to be, but hopefully he's forgotten about it, and he sleeps normally, and is perfectly happy. thanks again!

I can understand why this might worry you, especially when you can obtain any other information from your son. Do you think perhaps he saw something on tv that instilled this image in his head? Or perhaps he might be translating language used by one of his caretakers? I know that kids this age are starting to have nightmares, so it could just be a projection of anything that is not "normal" to him or an situation where he feels uncomfortable or frightened. I have heard my son, who just turned two, have a couple of what I might call nightmares, which sound worrisome especially when they are crying or calling out at night, but I have noticed that nothing is consistent so far. He does have a heightened sense of stranger danger now than ever before too. Best of luck!

I would ask his doctor about this. Is there a TV show where he would have picked this up? Maybe a TV character said something about the man being mean or whatever so he picked it up. If he's scared of it I would be asking a doctor but if its just something he says then i'd see how it plays out.
