What kind of breast pump do you find works well....

I have borrowed an Avent Isis from a friend who only used it for a few months, I've used a new "star" part, but find that I maybe get half and ounce when pumping. I actually had to take it apart, fiddle with the star insert or the handle and try again. Is this something others have found??

I have an Avent pump with the little star peice and the handle that always comes off.....and I hate it. It could even be the same pump as you have Susan. I also tried the electric pump that you can rent out from the hospital...... it also sucked! I generally just express my milk manually. I find it so much more natural than a pump.

I have Spectra 3 electric pump made from Korea. I bought it from online store. The suction is quite good but is a bit bulky to carry around. It is cheaper than Medela or Avent and works equally good based on my experience of these other machines when I was in Confinement Centre for 1 month (Chinese Tradition :P).

I have the Medela pump in style...I've been pumping since week one. Got PIH a week after delivery & was unable to nurse for a few days, and once girlfriend got used to that bottle, there was no getting her back on :( - she's only had breastmilk, but it's all been pumped & then bottlefed. Not saying it's not a PIA, but I was committed to only giving breastmilk for at least 6 months, so I've stuck with it. Not sure if it's just me, but I now pump every 4-5 hours (7-8 overnight), and typically get 8-12 oz each time. Yes, my fridge & freezer are overflowing. And, one side consistently produces 1-3 oz more than the other.

All that being said, I love this pump. Medela is great because it has so many versatile accessories that make travel or going back to work a little easier. I think I'm starting to sound like a commercial, but honestly, I feel like all I've done the past 3 months is pump! it is a bit pricey, but a lot of hospitals, & even babies r us have rental programs

I use the Evenflo model on a daily basis. However I don't really recommend it. I've had to call the company twice now and have them send me a new motor because he kept slowing down and the suction was decreasing. But I use it 3 times a day M-F so I might just wear it out. Who knows. But it takes me about 7-9 minutes per side and I get anywhere from 3-5oz total.

I used the Medela Pump In Style up until 10 weeks. When I used it right after I fed, I got very little milk. But after going back to work, I was getting about 10-12 ounces about 6 hours after the last nursing. In the evening if I got home after my son ate, I didn't get nearly as much. But same rules apply with pumping, the more you pump the more you produce.
I have a cousin with twins and she will pump on one side while she nurses on the other. Ingenious idea! I wish I had thought of it while I was still on leave. Then my son would have had breast milk longer.....I wore out on it early. It began to feel like a chore and that was my signal that it was time stop.

I have a medela advanced personal double pump. I got it free from WIC and it works real well but it costs about $425. I usually get about 6 oz when i pump (after about 2-3 hrs) but get anywhere from 2-9 oz depending on when the last time I pumped or fed was. I usually pump for about 5-10 minutes. I found that one breast empties slower than the other tho. i think there are less ducts on that side or something.

I have a Medela - pump 'n style I think is the model. It is electric, not manual. I like it. It only takes me 10-15 minutes and I get about 4 oz pumped.

don't really worry about the volume that you are getting, just worry about fully draining the breast. I've been using a pump for 11 weeks now as I had a premmie babe, but it gets easier the more you use it.

With the Isis model, do you still have the cushion insert? (the massage part) makes is work so much better..and if you find its getting too much pressure for you, then just break the seal only a little and it will ease the force being put on you.

just remember, it can take about 30 minutes sometimes to get just 3 ounces, but it is worth it as back up storage
