Hi,

I noticed today that my sons nails are really long and sharp (when he accidently got my face)

I was told at the hospital when he was born to leave them and they will just break which they do eventually but they are still long and sharp!

Does anyone use the baby nail clippers yet? I am too worried about cutting his little fingers by mistake

I've had the same problem with my daughter. I tried to clip her nails once and made her bleed so now I just use a nail file. You should try that and see how that works.

I also find that it is easiest clipping the nails when he is strapped into the BabyBjorn carrier facing forward, with his back against my stomach.

This is an awesome idea!!!

I have been clipping my baby's nails since he was a week old. The best way to go would be to use baby scissors instead of nail clippers. I was really scared in the beginning, but i was amazed at how easy it turned out to be. I usually do it while feeding him...so that he is close to me & does'nt squirm too much.

My mother told me to bite the nails as you won't harm the baby like scissors or clippers which I do with my newborn but my little girl's nails (nearly 2 now) i leave and they wear down naturally as I don't want to get her into the habit of biting nails!

I just use baby clippers. Do it when he is feeding because he is concentrating on feeding then noticing he's finger nails are getting cut and move them. :) They do fall off but they still stay sharp and my son seems to scratch himself on his face alot.

i totally use baby clippers.  i have a pair that have a flip up magnifying glass that i got at BRU for really cheap.  they are made by red cross i think.  they are awesome and i have never clipped his little fingers.  i use the nail files as well after i clip because they are still sharp.

my son has excema so the scratching became a problem.  after i clipped and files he was fine.

it also helps to have some one hold him while you do it.  mine likes to kick alot now so have my husband hold his legs so he doesn't twitch.  lol

I bought the same kind, and yes they are made by the red cross, you can probably find it at any target or babbies r us, but i do wait till he is asleep as well and i have never knicked him.

i also wait until she is sleeping. if she's awake i'll cut her, she moves her hands too much. i use little nail scissors, which work really well - but i have to cut them every 2 or 3 days.

I chew my baby's off. They come off easy and never bleed.

My daughter's nails are to hard to just file, so wait until she is asleep. That way I can take my time. You are bound to cut a finger once in a while. You just have to relax and keep going.

Try dipping baby's fingertips in baby powder. This will prevent you from cutting too short. I also find that it is easiest clipping the nails when he is strapped into the BabyBjorn carrier facing forward, with his back against my stomach.

try rubbing some baby lotion into them after hes been in the bath its makes them softer and not as sharp.

Yes I do. My little girls' nails grow very fast. I got a pair of baby clippers that have a little light built in. They work really well. she squirms a lot now that she's older, (she's 16 weeks) so I do it when she's sleeping.

i clipped my sons nails since he was a week old. never clipped his finger tip until he was 3 and a half months old(a week ago):( it bled forever and i thought i was gonna have to take him in. but it eventually stopped bleeding and it's already healed. i didn't finish clipping his nails so my sister did it when we visited her on sunday.

I cut my sons nails once and accidently cut him a bit... usually I only bite them or rip them off (if they are soft enough they'll just peel across). I know a few people who usually just bite them off, then there's no cutting them!

I use clippers and do it while his Dad is feeding him.. that way he stays totally still and I have had no issues with doing it this way. I also did use just a file the first few weeks.

Yes.....use a file!! I was doing good for a while using little clippers...then one day I snipped his thumb and it bled forever and he cried for about 30 minutes! I felt so terrible. I use a file now :) Try to do it when he is alseep or at least calm and not moving all around.

The first time I used the baby clippers, I got a piece of skin instead and she yelped! For a month after that, I was told the nails were so soft that they could be ripped off. They did and never went into the quick (red part of the nail). I use the baby clippers now when she's calm and not moving around. She doesn't fuss. Just make sure you hold onto her fingers tightly. It helps if she has a good grib on your fingers too. Good luck!

I use the little baby scissors that came in a med pack I got. I trim them when she is nursing and kind of in that trance state.

i used a file at the begining because their nails are so soft from being in utero in all that fluid!  now her nails are strong and require a nail clipper....definately do it when she is asleep and dont cut too close to her finger.....there is a piece of skin there called the "quick" dont clip that!  he will bleed!  it helps to retract the pad of the finger just under the nail as you clip...take your time and you dont have to do all 10 at once.....then file to make sure there are no sharp edges.

I was worried about cutting my son's nails too! And I have a VERY steady hand, since I paint. I tried and snipped the very tip of his finger and it bled forever. Although my son just yelped and was fine.

I prefer to use nail files instead of clipping. Takes out some of the anxiety.
