Drinking too much milk!

My son will be 19 month old next week. His doctor now says he should be drinking no more than 16oz. of whole milk each day. Easy for him to say, my son is going to turn into a cow he drinks so much! I've been trying to cut back. The thing is he can go all day without any as long as we are busy, busy, busy. If he gets bored for one second he asks for it. At this point he is still drinking about 24-30oz. of milk a day (i know its a lot)...The other problem is the bottle. He wants it in a bottle not a cup. He drinks everything else from a cup but, milk must be in a bottle. Ive tried watering it down, Ive tried water in a bottle. He has an attachment to the bottle with milk in it...its his comforting thing. Any suggestions on how to cut back on both? Without having a screaming child for days?

thanks everyone...i have started to cut back, and he has officially been having 16-20 oz. a day...watered it down a little more so he doesn't ask for it so much, and I offer much more cups off ice water in his sippy cups or juice.

my daughter who is alao 19 months still has at least 20 oz of milk a day and will only have it from a bottle although her water she has from a beaker. i think its a comfort thing more than anything but i think if she likes it she can have it, but i really want to get rid of the bottle

My 19th month old is also drinking a lot of milk per day (22oz). He's a big boy and is a good eater too so my doc isn't concerned. We are down to bottle only at night but will have to get rid of that soon too I guess :( Sounds like you need to make distinction of when your son needs milk for thirst and when he needs it for comfort. When you know it is just for comfort, you'll have to figure out way for him to replace with other comfort behavior and maybe cut back at those times. Good luck!

I read somewhere that its as simple as a 12-24 month old should be drinking 12-24 ounces of Whole milk each day! They say no more than 24 ounces, because then it starts to impede on their food appetite in the day. My son will drink at least 16 ounces of milk a day, and sometimes 30ounces (on hot days).

My kid drinks just as much milk, ask your Dr. why he can't have it...if he says weight, then perhaps switching to skim milk for some of it. I personally don't care, my kid likes it....so be it! As far as the bottle, just get rid of them honestly...throw them all away ...in a few days he'll be fine. Better now then later!

My daughter also is a VERY big milk drinker, but she does drink it out of a sippy. What I would do is just put the milk in the sippy. If he doesn't drink it, oh well, he will have drank other drinks that day. Especially if he drinks so much of it, it surely won't hurt for him to cut down on it. The only way you are going to get him off the bottle is to just not give it to him, plain and simple. He will get over it, just be patient!
