I have given Ben half a rice cake which he can gum until it's soft enough to swallow but have to take it away from him when it gets small enough for him to stuff all the way in. I'm also afraid of choking. I've also given him frozen mini bagels that he can hold and gum and since he has his bottom two teeth, he can actually scrape some off, but even without them, he can still get the taste. Ben started solids by sucking on a whole banana (until he bit it off and then I freaked out and had to retrieve it from his mouth, but it at least gave him the taste of real food), and he enjoys his mashed banana now. Good luck.

Susan how many weeks along were you when she was born?

Developmental milestones tend to happen in weeks. So she might be ready for solids at 7 months, 2 weeks. But let's say she has been born for 7 months, but she was born at 37 weeks...that actually makes her 6 months 1 week, not 7 months.

It sounds like she is giving you cues that she is not ready for foods. I would switch to large items that she can mouth to relieve her possible teething, such as a large piece of celery or a full size carrot.

Oh,I didnt even think about the veggies in the can I will def have to pick some up!
Makenna is slowly easing into actually eating the snacks.
When I give her the Gerber Puffs, it takes about 3 to 4 times putting them in her mouth and her pushing them out until they are soggy enough she will eat them. I'mguessing that's normal -maybe due to the way it feels in her mouth? (compared to soft baby food that is easier to swallow)

Try just placing them on her tray. She might start out by just playing with them. That's okay too!!! Eventually she may try to eat them. My daughter also really enjoys green beans and carrots from the can. They are in water so they are REALLY soft. I started by just placing on her highchair tray and let her go to town!! It took a couple of days before she actually starting eating!! Good luck and let us know how it goes!!!

UPDATE:::::::::::
So I bought 1. gerber puffs 2.mums 3.cheeto puff looking things (for babies) 4. arrowroot cookies.

The only thing Makenna would get close to are the mums and that's cause I "forced" them on her ..aka stuck in her mouth.
I tried getting the other items in her mouth, but her lips were sealed .. tight! lol

But ..no choking!! Yay!! I don't think she really was eating the mums. More like "this is a new thing, let's play". She would stick it in mouth - but she wasn't all about eating.

Thank you ladies so much for your help/advice/support!!

Baby Mum Mum Rusks are fantastic! If you look at my profile picture, that's the second time that my daughter tried them. She doesn't have any teeth yet, but three should cut through at any time. She hasn't started crawling yet, although she is a pro at rolling and spinning around the room. Even if she had teeth and was fully mobile, she would still be supervised while eating them just in case. They do dissolve fairly quickly [she's recently decided that she wants to feed mommy and daddy lol], but they seem to be really good practice because she can still bite down on them and feed herself.

The Puffs Are Great! My Daughter Loves Them. I Felt The Same Way You Guys Do But Now I Know That She Is Okay With Them. She Loves Them I Mean I Still Watch Her With Them Cause She Feeds Them To Herself But Wow Does She Go To Town With Them. I Also Get These MUM MUM Rusks From Walmart. They Are By The Baby Food In That Isle. At My Store They Are Up At The Top Of The Shelf. She Loves Those. They Are Very Thin And She Likes Holding It. Good Luck Let Us Know How It Goes!

My son likes the Graduates Puffs and for when she starts teeting Earth's Best has these teething bisquits that are really hard. The bisquits won't break but I do watch him to be sure. Both are messy but fun. :)

I have the same problem, I am so scared she will choke on her food, but she is going to nursery and they give her all kinds of things they usually give her mashed up food but lately when the older kids eat biscuits or cheese she will grab it and eat it. So I bought some rusks and things for her to chew on if you are really worried why not soften it in some milk or water so it is already pretty soft before you give it to her. Ow and she has no teeth and doesn't really crawl..

My son isn't crawling yet either....and he sometimes will gag on them, but they dissolve when they are in their mouth....and expecially with all the slobber that my son has, he usually has no problem with them, he is even tryin to feed himself, and he can with the graham crackers but the puffs are kinda small for him to do it himself....i would just try them and if she doesn't do well you can always put them back in the cabinet and try again the next week.....

Thank you for your help!
I'm not sure why Makenna does this: but she is still using the "tongue thrust".
Not all of the time - she only does it with certain foods. She hates the baby food fruit and certain vegetables and that's usually when she does it (she really only like the green veggies. weird!).
Anyway - the only time I see her doing the "chewing" movements with her mouth is when she's messing with her gums (rubbing her tongue against them). I haven't seen her do it with foods - but I've only given her baby food.

So, do you think it's still safe to try her on the Gerber Puffs? I've been wanting to buy some - but on the packaging it said to start giving it to them when they are crawlers. She's not crawling just yet.

I know I should try it .. but my major thing is her starting to choke on it. I'm so nervous about it!!

My son also has no teeth yet, and is also teething.....i just give him the gerber fruit puffs and they also have the cheetos like puffs....they dissolve in their mouth and then there is really no risk of choking.....he also loves graham crackers...i just buy the shaped ones...i think the ones that we have are cars or something....but he also "chews" his food....or at least thats what it looks like he is doing but without the teeth......good luck
