Hey. Has anyone else had a porblem with their little one especailly boys at about age 21 mos start sticking their hands down their pants all the time? lately everytime I turn around he has his hands in his pants, front or back it doesn't seem to matter. I was just wondering if this might be normal or something i should mention to the doctor.

Thanks, Aimee

Yup its very normal. He's learning about his body but doesn't know that its inappropriate to have his hands down there around others. When our daughter has her hands down her pants (shes 22 months) we just tell her that she can put her hands down her pants in her bedroom and that its something you do in private and then distract her with a toy or book. Seems to have worked because she hasnt done it in awhile now (except in her bed/bedroom) Just make sure you dont scold or embarrass him about it because that can lead with body issues and seeing his body as bad or embarrassing.

yeah it's totally normal for boys and girls alike. but just like deanna says "don't scold them or embarrass them". then they'll feel like they are doing something wrong or bad. my daughter puts her hand "down there" when i change her diaper and i just tell her " no your hands are dirty or you're gonna get pee-pee on your hands" kids are just curious and we shouldn't punish them for it but now is a perfect time to teach them about manners. my sister has 4 kids and she has stories about her kids "exploring". lol in fact, it's in one of my baby books. it's totally normal. hope this helps aimee

Yep mine to does it,he is 22 months old and I just tell him what it is and if he does it in public I tell him no (which he has not yet) , and explain why. It's a stage and will pass, I believe... or they will finally start understanding soon!!!

My son does it too and He always plays with his peepee when hes on the potty. I laughed once, and as you well know by now, that was a huge mistake, I am constantly reminding him that his peepee is not for touching. He listens about as well as a boy can lol. No worries, he will grow out of it until hes a teenager :)

My daughter use to always have her hands down the back of her diaper and when she had a messy diaper would come up with a very dirty hand! She doesn't do it as much as she use to, maybe because she wears so many dresses? I would say keep him in onesies under his clothes and then he won't be able to do it!

My son 22 months does that all the time! He takes off his diaper and runs around the house showing it to everyone! He calls it ling a ling. LOL Sometimes I just want to stop him, but I just tell hime his ling a ling is for inside his diaper! This is a natural stage of autonomy and self discovery. But it does make everyone around the child a little uncomfortable!!

You are not the only mom that has to see that! My little boy does it to. I think he is ready for potty training so i'm going to start trying tomorrow!

OMG.......my son does it ALL DAY. and when he cannot put his hand in his pants, he puts his hands in my shirt (on my breast). I nursed him until he was 16 months, so the doctor says this is normal. But my son always has his hand in his pants or down my shirt. Glad I am not alone

Sometimes my son does it but not often. I don't think he has done in the last month he is now (22month). I didn't make a big deal about it and he has lost interest in doing that.

glad to know im not alone. my dd does this and it drives me up the wall. how many times a day do i have to say "get your hands out of your butt!" luckily she's potty trained. i think it might be dry or something cause she rubs the same part of her butt cheek. they are learning their bodies so it's normal for them to touch

yeh my little boy loves to touch/explore his bits haha. Every time the nappy comes off he grabs it and says whats this!? he's just being a typical boy i imagine :) I'd only discourage him if he was doing it in public..but that's not happened yet.

it is nothing to worry about, he is just learning about his body.

My son does that too, I just tell him no hands in his pants and he takes them out. Sometimes I tell him 1 time a day sometimes 25 times. Once I taught him the names (p.p. and bottom) he hasn't done it as much. I think he just wanted to know what was down there :)
