My son just turned 1 and I am going to start weaning him off the bottle, but I would like to know how much milk he should be getting per day when he goes to sippy cup? The day I tried it, he only drank 2 oz with his breakfast when before he would drink 6 - 8 oz by bottle (also with breakfast). Right now he is getting approx. 24 oz milk (3 bottles per day). I appreciate everyone's help!!!

If you go to a wic clinic they tell you that a 1 yr old is only supposed to have 16 oz of whole milk a day. My daughter drinks roughly around 20 oz. She uses a straw cup for most of the day and a 4oz bottle at night. Still working on the weaning thing. For sippy cups topping it is 8 oz. so if you are sucessful with the weaning i would recommend four sippys half way filed with the milk. GOOD LUCK

How strange that she drinks her water/juice from one and not her milk. I can't think of anything else to try. I'm not sure when they're supposed to stop their morning milk are you? I suppose it's good that she drinks from her cup with everything else though, at least when her milk stops completely you won't have any trouble there.

He only has his milk in a sippy cup in the morning, then sippy cup throughout the day with water but he still has his bottle at night. x

Hi Candice

He didn't like it at first, he drank it and wondered why it was milk and not water and threw it at me! I kept trying, it was about a week later when he finally gave in and started drinking it but I've had no problems since, so it didn't really take that long for him to adjust. Does she have a freeflow cup or one she has to suck? I started with a freeflow and he didn't like it, because he was used to sucking his bottle he sucked at it and went all over his face (funny for me, but not so funny for him!!) so I swapped to a non spill cup that he has to suck and he was a lot better. You may have tried this already though, sorry I can't be of more help!!! Let me know how you get on! x

Ive tried every sippy cup we own (including with a straw) lol. I gave up fairly quickly tho because I was worried she wasnt getting enough milk so I suppose I should just keep trying each day. Does your bub drink from a sippy cup all the time or does he still have a bottle at night?

Thanks again :)

I work in mls but I think 8oz is roughly 240mls, you might need to check though. I've been told Stanley (my son - just turned 1) should be having 600mls a day, this includes anything he has with his cereal for breakfast but also includes stuff like cheese and yoghurts. He currently has 210mls of milk from a sippy cup in the morning plus cereal about an hour later, he has a yoghurt at lunchtime and then his night bottle of 240mls before bed. I don't know if this helps or not????

Hi Vicki,

I just wanted to ask if it was hard to get him to drink out of a cup? My Daughter who has also just turned 1 will only drink her milk from a bottle. She drinks juice and water from a cup but not her milk. I have heard that the bottle can become an attachement and Im abit worried that this will happen.

Thanks

I asked my ped the same question and he said that my daughter should be getting 3 servings of dairy a day, from any source. My daughter is not a big fan of cows milk. She only likes to drink it if she is really thirsty, so I make sure to feed her yogurt every morning and try to get her to eat some cheeses.

My doctor said babies at there age need between 500-600mls per day. Thats including dairy snacks during the day. My little one has a bottle when he wakes up and before bed, and a sippy cup for afternoon tea, he also gets yoghurt, cheese or some kind of dairy during the day aswell and his cereal has milk in it too. Im going to try and change his morning bottle to a sippy cup soon, because he bites on the teats and they now flow as much as a sippy cup lol. I want to try him on one of those ones with the straws to see how he goes with sucking up a straw.

My pediatrician says that babies need at least 3 - 8oz bottles of whole milk each day. Juice or water inbetween for snacks is good too.

My LO wont eat cereal in the morning...she plain down refuses too!! So i give her a bottle when she wakes up in the morning...one about 3 hours later athen a yoghurt or purity fruit for lunch then another bottle, supper time she has any food she wants...fish, veggies, mash, purity (sometimes), whatever her taste buds want and then if she is still up past 8 another bottle!!!

My little man just turned one. He has a bottle of cows milk (approx 250ml) in the morning and the same again before he goes to sleep. During the day he has a bit of milk with his weet-bix and a tub of yoghurt. Sometimes he will have a piece of cheese also. I think two feeds of milk a day is sufficient if they are getting the calcium in other foods. Hope this helps :)

My little one WOULD NOT drink from a classic sippy cup, we tried the cups with built in straws and voila! She does fabulous! She also loves drinking from a regular glass too, but refuses to hold it on her own. She just turned one this week, so your little one could probably do this too.

I've been told 24 oz or three bottles a day for my son who also just turned one so i think you're right on track. We just made the switch to whole milk and now need to do away with the bottle for a sippy cup which thus far has been wildly unsuccessful. Any tips?

My little girl has just turned 1 too and she is still having three bottles a day. I have tried her with a cup / beaker but she's having none of it. I think it's ok for them to have a little less milk to drink at this age as long as they are getting the calcium needed from other foods. My daughter doesn't always drink all of her milk so the amount she consumes is different daily.
