My son turned 14 mos on the 9th, I know people who put their kids into swimming lessons before they even turned one! Others who waited until they were a few years old... I've heard babies learn quicker because they have no fear, and boy is that the case for Isaac! I guess I'd just like everyone else's imput, because I'd like to look into classes, but I'm not sure what the "average age" is or if its really too early...

My 6 year old started swimming lessons at about 18 months. We always do the lessons in the spring to get her ready for swimming all summer in her grandparents pool. I LOVE the lessons. It is a great bonding time for parent and baby too. Last summer at 5, she was swimming across the pool. Next summer I expect her to be ready for the deep end. They teach them safety around water and just getting used to it at first. You can totally get little Isaac into the lessons. I am sure he (and you!) will love it! Little Alli (14 months) will be starting this February! Can't wait to see her blowing those bubbles!

My son started swimming lessons at 6 months and has loved every minute of it! He can now swim from the instructor to me ( a distance of about 1 metre), can swim under water, knows how to hold his breath under water and keep his mouth closed, can sit on the side of the pool and tip himself forward into it (when I'm there to catch him!) and knows not to run around the poolside and to always hold my hand. I totally recommend it!! Plus it's great quality Mum and baby time!

I highly recommend not swimming lessons, but ISR (Infant Swimming Resource) lessons. They teach aquatic survival skills, which is SO important, especially at this age. My daughter had her first rouns when she was 8 months old and now knows how to flip onto her back and float, even fully clothed, including a jacket! Next month we start round 2 and she is going to be taught to float-swim-float to get to the edge of whatever body of whater she is in, again she will be tested to make sure she can do this fully clothed.

We are really pleased with this program and it offers so much more than "traditional" swimming lessons. Check them out for an instructor in your area....so worth it. www.infantswim.com

You can start them here from as little as 3 months old, At the start I think its just to get them used to the water, im not really sure what age they start teaching them to swim, but I think from about 1 onwards they teach how to hold their breath undfer the water, etc. My son starts swimming lessons on the 6th of Feb and he will be 15 months old,I wanted to start earlier but they were closed for the holidays and we have just moved. As we have a pool in our backyard I think its critical we get swimming lesson ASAP.
