Hi I have a 2 year old that has been sick for a week..... here's what happened. I am looking for advice or support cause I'm lost. So 8 days ago he started with a runny nose and a cough. I had to go to the doc that day and she checked him out and concluded it was a cold. However by Monday (6 full days into it) he was much sick and not getting better, has had a low grade to moderate fever on and off, cough runny nose and just miserable, also no eating and not active. I took the day off work and went to the clinic. She took one look at his ear tand said infection and will need antibiotics. So I took him home and started the Amoxicillian which he had never had before. So on Monday night he cried for 5 hours straight, I was so scared( I am a single mom all on my own)he was saying owies and pulling hishair and ears So then on Tues morning he statred having Diarehha that was black in color, and saying owies for his penis which was red an swollen ( I reluctently went to work yesterday so my mom as with him) she called me and I asked her to call our local nurses line who in turn told her to take him back to the doctor, which she did. So now the same doctor says within that 24 hours from seeing him on Monday the Ear Infection is now in both ears and said to stop the Amoxicillian for a few days and gave him cream for his penis which is a yeast infection caused from the diarehha. She also said bring him back ifnot better in a few days .My concren is that if the infection has moved into his other ear so quickly and he is in so much pain is he going to get better without meds? HELP I'm lost and have no idea what to do next. Any help advice or words of experience are welcome. Thanks

Amanda, if he continues to get extreme ear infections you should ask to be referred to an ENT.

Listen i myself had a really bad ear infection not so long ago it was that bad my ears had actually closed up. I couldn't even put ear drops in because they were sealed shut. The pain i was in was excruitiating seriously I was given morphine to hlep me at night and i was anti-biotice but i had to take 2 course of them and it felt like ages before it got better. They ended up syringing cream into my ear to help the infection because it was so bad. If he has pain in his ears get a warm/hot washer and place it over his ear and surrounding area..it will help relieve the pain and clear out mucus. But he should definitly be on anti-biotics and pain medication.!! Take him to the hospital if needed and tell them that he needs something now and you're not leaving until he gets something. He can't speak for himself so you do it for him xx good luck

After having a son with ear infection. I would see another doc.
Keep at the doctor's. You know your baby best of all. With my boy's ears I get him checked out regularly and after he has been sick we give him a check up as well.

Ear Infection is back again....these are nightmares, he's in so much pain. Started in Tuesday, and we were snowed in yesterday, but this morning he isn't crying about it, seems to have gone away and no fever this morning either. Just hope it stays that way!

I would skip that doctor and take him to an ER for a full work up.

Try Silver Shield it comes in a liquid or gel. Also known as colloidal silver. It works for throat and ear infections. Liquid can be used as ear drops or throat spray. It is a natural antibiotic with no side affects. I used it when my son had a throat infection. I have also used the gel for myself for nipple thrush as it also kills yeast infection. http://www.theherbsplace.com/Silver_Shie... http://www.squidoo.com/Natural-Antibioti... It can also be taken daily as a suppliment so you don't get sick. I have also used the Hylands ear infection tablets for my son which are a natural product as well.

frist of all you should look into getting a different doctor. my sons have both had plenty of ear infections. the ear infection most likely was due to the runny nose. My children s doctor told me that when the nose drains it causes the ear to become inflamed. the other ear was most likely already infected and the docotor just over looked it. I don't understand why the doctor took your son off the meds unless it was because the diharrea which is a side affect of the meds. they still should have gave him something for the infection. for the yeast infection I have found the best thing for them is fried corn starch. my grandma made me some when my oldest got his first yeast infection and it works faster that the meds they give you for it. all you do is fly the corn starch in a warm not hot skillet till it becomes the same consistency of powered sugar. You apply it like you would baby powder and it takes the infection away quick.

tis sounds like a very bad infaction, perhaps take him to a diffrent dr. my brother had cronic ear infections for the first 4 years, and they can be very bad, but i'd take him to see someone else.

Oh, poor little guy!
I think you should try another doctor, your son sounds like he is not responding well to the medication he is on, and needs some other treatment.

Antibiotics are really hard on the digestive system, the amoxycillin has killed off the 'good' bacteria in your son's gut, which is why he has serious diarrhoea. Get some 'probiotics' into him - lactobacillus, bifidus, acidophilus - you should be able to get some at a chemist or health food shop.

I think the penis thing sounds really dodgy - get a second opinion! I learned through bad experiences that you must always question doctors if you are not happy - they are human and make mistakes!!

Ear infections in small children are not uncommon, and can be treated with antibiotics if they are bad, but if your son is reacting badly to the amoxycillin, ask for alternatives - there are different types that might be better for him. There are also some excellent alternatives and things that can be used together with it - homeopathics can be amazing and are totally safe, and traditional chinese herbal medicine can also be really really effective and is safe. It's really important that he gets enough vitamins C and D to recover properly, as well as selenium, iron and other essential vits and minerals. Unless he is still breastfed, he might need some support with extra vitamins and minerals for a while.

Best wishes, I hope your little guy gets better soon!

my son had an ear infection and was prescribed the same antibiotic, a day or two into taking it he too had black dirrahorrea. The doctor said it was the antibiotics that caused it so we stopped taking it and he was fine. I think when they are so small it takes a lot longer for them to get better. It's horrible when they are unwell isn't it. Thankfully he isn't ill often but when he is is usually lasts around a week. Hope your little boy is on the mend :-)

I hope your son is feeling better, if not this is what I would do take him to the hospital and dont budge intill a peatrician has checked him out. Its to long for a little one to be sick, especially one who hasnt any meds to help him fight infection. Ask for an antibiotic that is stronger than amoxicillian i think its clavlox and Amoxcillian is the next step, if you go back to a GP. DO NOT take no for an answer. I would get a second opinion on the yeast infection to, as boys dont tend to get yeast infection it sounds more like a UTI, which needs more than a cream. I am a bitch at the hospital and Dr's but my kids always get the treatment they need and the proper check ups. Its hard being a single mom to, but at least you have your mom to help :)

The dirrahorrea could be because of the antibiotic.

I'm no doctor but I would be concerned too. A bad infection in both ears, plus a yeast infection and diarrhea sounds like too much for a little body.

Also you said he lost his appetite so that plus the diarrhea could lead to dehydration. Finally I would hate for his hearing to be compromised and unfortunately that happened to my friends son he got a bad ear infection that permanently damaged his hearing.

So if the doctors at this clinic are not acting aggressively enough is there another doctor clinic or hospital that you can get a second opinion at? My advice is trust your instincts if you are not confidant that he is getting the best treatment look elsewhere, ask questions, tell the doctor you see all the symptoms, medications, etc. and don't leave until you agree on a plan to heal your child.
