When should we introduce big people food?

We only feed our 8 month old baby foods and baby finger foods. I have friends telling me he's ready for french fries and things like that to munch on. I don't really want him eating those kinds of foods. They are fatty and bad for him. Are we delaying his development by NOT giving him big people food? I get those books in the mail about your child's development and where he/she should be and my son is right on... I think we are doing fine. What are other mother's feeding their kids at 8 months old? Mine is eating stage 2 baby foods, multi-grain cereal and Gerber Puffs and Mum Mum Rusks.

Don't let people pressure you into giving him junk.. eating FRENCH FRIES isnt a milestone.. and youre right theyre bad for him.. Giving him french fries would be to teach him how to chew.. and thats what the puffs and baby biscuits are doing.. You can give him small peices of melons, or sweet potatoes or boiled carrots just to taste the different textures.. but I haven't done a lot w/finger foods with my daughter because shes 7 1/2 mos and doesnt have teeth yet so I'm nervous about choking.

Thanks for all the advise everyone. My son doesn't have any teeth yet so he can't chew anything. Our problem is, my husband and I eat out ALOT and we don't want him eating the same things we are. I think we just need to get off our lazy butts and get to the store. :) He tried a little piece of egg this weekend but it didn't go down too well. I don't think he really liked it anyway.

Yip, my daughter eats pretty much what we eat. We don't eat "junk" food.... Also I've found that if they see you eating it, they are more eager to eat it too. As Jaime B suggested, make sure he can chew it and watch baby....

My son is almost 8 months and he gets some table foods, but he still also eats baby food. I have recently switched him to stage 3 because there are small chunks in it. If you are worried about choking or anything like that, try swithchig to stage 3 so he can get a few little chunks and see how he does. If he does fine, then you can start soft veggies, fruits, and meats. Good Luck!

Also, my son LOVES the gerber yogurt melts! They dissolve fast and are healthy!!

I give my son regular food along with breast feeding and cereal. It's more for his eye hand coordination and also to get use to feeding himself....I am totally with you about what I give him. I only give him fruits, veggies and crackers...I'll give him a bite of meat...but it is really about your comfort level...you need to do what you feel comfortable doing...

My daughter is almost 8 months.the doctor told me that along with the baby food I could feed her table food off my plate..she has been doing really well with it..I have not given her fatty foods..she loves veggies, fruits, meats..everything I eat she tries..I got her to eat baby food carrots after she had them on my plate..she would not eat them before.
I smash it up. a lot of times or I give her tiny pieces..she has a cleft palate..that was my big concern..I only give her table food at supper time..along with baby food

Yep, we are pretty much the same, we just tried dry toasted ww bread (we cut the toast into strips and no crusts), and are going to try frozen ww bagels (good for teething too!). Also, we let her suck/ gum deseeded cucumber strips, watermelon, and pretty much anything in a meshbag (the nuby ones). Hope this helps. I just asked a questions regarding feeding at this age too, it is sometimes hard to get it all figured out!

My daughter pretty much eats what we eat, as long as she can chew it well... peas, corn, rice, pasta, meat, fruits, you name it, as long as she can chew it. Suppose it would also depend on your son's ability to chew and if he has any teeth.

I feel that I did not give my son a variety of foods and textures when he was younger, now I struggle with giving him fruit and vegetables...mainly because he doesn't like the texture...I read that at this stage, it's all about getting them to feed themselves and be introduced to a variety of foods, not so much the amount. I wouldn't suggest giving junk food to your son, such as the fries your friends have tried, but there is nothing wrong with soft vegetables and meats...don't be afraid to try these, just make sure he can chew it so he doesn't choke...good luck!
