What are some ideas to keep your children from being influenced by peer preassure?

I've tried, since my sons were little, (they are now 12, 9, and 7) to always make sure that they have opportunities to know their own mind, from letting them order whatever they want at a restaurant for lunch, to letting them pick what instrument they want to play in the school band. With the latter, my eldest son rambled on about what his friends were choosing, when I sat him down, had him look me in the eye, and gently asked him, what instrument would make your heart SING? When he smiled, and shyly confessed that the drums were what he wanted to play, I know he was making the right choice. It's experiences like these that I hopes he remembers when faced with other, more difficult decisions. We talk often about following his heart, doing what is RIGHT for HIM, doing what makes him feel GOOD, inside and out. I'm blessed, though. I have a sensitive, thoughtful boy who really *sees* the world through the eyes of someone much older. My suggestion is to keep the lines of communication open. Talk, openly and honestly, about making decisions that they can feel good about, now, and in the future. Good luck!
