I think most of us have been following the story of the killing of Trayvon Martin. Here is what the president said:

"PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA: I can only imagine what these parents are going through. And when I think about this boy, I think about my own kids.

You know, if I had a son, he'd look like Trayvon. And, you know, I think they are right to expect that all of us, as Americans, are going to take this with the seriousness it deserves and that we're going to get to the bottom of exactly what happened."

Do you think the President should be weighing in on this incident? Why or why not?

Some believe he commented only because it is an election year and he's doing it to secure more votes from blacks. What are your thoughts on that belief?

Barbara,

That is basically how I felt about it. It was later that I heard the opinion that he was using it to get the black vote. (as though he doesn't have it?) But then along those lines I wondered about the Hispanic vote, wouldn't that also be a concern if his only thought was getting votes?

I actually liked his comment when he made it. Later, the only concern I had was whether or not a president should be making judgmental comments about a case that hasn't gone through the judicial system, but his comment really just said, "... we're going to get tot eh bottom of exactly what happened." I think we all formulate an opinion in this case based on the 911 calls, and stats about killings since the enactment of the "stand your ground" law; based on these things there is obviously a problem with the law.

If he was asked the question, he should answer, and clearly he was asked. He has an excellent point that his son would look like Trayvon, so of course he would feel very connected along with being connected with any incidents like this happening during his presidency, just as he is expected to comment on many headline events. He is a compassionate man, and a father, so regardless of it being an election year or not, it is OK for him to respond, and he did appropriately.
