Well, since my daughter has an Oct birthday, I am already thinking ahead to next year. She won't turn 5 till Oct 17 and will miss the Kind cut off. She is very tall and very verbal. Of course I think she's pretty smart and she's a social butterfly so I would love for her to start school next Fall. She's been in Preschool 3 days a week since she was 18 months old and loves it. Any thoughts or ideas?

I agree with the september cut off dates! That is way to early!! My persanl opinon is that they should be able to start kindergarden the year they turn five...soo the last day of December should be the cut off date, Thats my personal opinon. My daughter was affected by this to but will stillbe starting Kindergarden in the fall because we are moving to California and I the cut off date there is the 2nd of December. We are currently in MN and their cut off date is Sept 1st...even for Preschool! She wasn't able to start Preschool until this past year and is having to be cut short because of us moving.

But I do know some schools will let you test her is...I hear thats a long process though

I am a kindergarten teacher in Missouri and our cut off is August 1st. The only exceptions is if a child started school in another state, say Kansas, when they were 4. Other than that they have to wait. My son will be 5 on Oct. 3rd. He is a VERY tall boy for his age and I'm concerned as many of you are, how this will effect him. However, having taught kindergarten for 6 years, I say the GENERAL rule is that for boys at least, it's better to wait since they typically don't mature until later. There are always exceptions. I believe a previous poster suggested private school and this might be something to look into since they don't have to follow all of the "regulations" that public schools do.

In Texas that doesn't even work, because not only do you have to be 5 by Sept 1st, you have to be 6 by Sept 1st to enter 1st grade! Kids don't have to start Kindergarden here either.

If you see this, leave this form field blank.

Did any of you mothers find a way for your child to start early? I am in Missouri and I am planning on moving her to Oklahoma this summer for a month and have her start there for a few days and then move her back to Missouri and enroll before school even starts here. I am looking for someone who has done this.

Amanda I would love to sign your petition. I am a missourian as well my daughters birthday is Aug 15 so you could probably imagine how livid I am. She is in a private school now attending preschool. She has been tested and proven very bright by public and private schools I've looked in my area, but they still refuse to look past the state mandate. I too have been looking for any loop hole possible. What if anything were you able to do for your child. Were u able to find her a private school willing to take her?

I just called my school district and they let me know in Missouri the child has to be 5 by July(even though school does not start til August) to be enrolled in kindergarten. So I am going to start a petition and talk to the appropriate politicians and make a roar in the community, news if I have to. My advanced child has to be held back a whole year of school because she was born the wrong month? That is not fair. I should not have to look for loop holes and enroll her in one private school and have her get used to it there just to take her out and enroll in another school. I want her to be able to move on from preschool with all the other kids who were in her class the last 2 years that are going on to kindergarten, because they were born the 'right' month. Whats even more frustrating, is she is more advanced than some of the children that are moving on to kindergarten. This whole cut off day thing sickens me. My daughter could be in school learning something, instead she is going to school just to play.

I am having the same issue! My daughter actually turns 5 on October 17th as well! She has been in pre school for 2 years and before that I schooled her at home. She is very bright and I feel like she does not learn many new things in the class she is in now, because we already have done it at home. According to her age, she should have a year of preschool left, but I think that is holding her back, and we are really trying to move her to kindergarten next year. I am not sure what to do about it :(

My daughter turns 5 October 30. I however found a way to get her into Kinder. Catholic School's cut off date is December 31st. Once you are enrolled, you're in the system and have to be in school. There for you can start in Catholic for a few months then pull out and go anywhere. There a loop hole for ya. It does cost some money depending on the school, but so worth it in the long run so that they're still with their peers and not being forced to wait

my son misses the cut-off here by a short time too. PA made it september (some beginning and only found one for 15th) and he loves school soo much. i feel bad for him because i was still 4 until the middle of jan when i was in K. i did just fine. i know that he loves school, so i have to keep him in preschool. i do know that you can have them tested to see if they are right for K and a decision (depending on the state) could be made to start early, and in some cases private schools have later cut-off dates and they can start there for a year and head over to public school the next year so they don't miss out. i haven't found one for my son that has a cut-off after his birthday yet though.

Every state is different for the cutoff date and some states do have testing if your kids birthday is after that date but they have to be very advanced to pass them. I live in Kansas and the cutoff is aug.31 and they make no exceptions

I was thinking about this to, I live in Illinois and the cut off is September first. There is a test she can take though for early admission into kindergarden, I was thinking on having her take it. Call your school district and see if they offer that where you live.

Wow! I'm so glad I joined this group and found this. I currently live in CA where the cut-off is in Dec sometime but we are planning on moving to VA this summer when school lets out for my daughter and then planned on enrolling them BOTH in school there. It turns out VA also has this ridiculous Sept 30th cut-off. I believe my husband and daughter will be making the move this summer without my son and I. I am going to enroll him in school here in CA and we will move and join them in Oct AFTER his 5th B-Day, he will then be considered a transfer and all will be well. I see absolutely no point in keeping him back any longer with his progress he should be reading by the end of summer. He has not attended any preschools but we work with him at home. The time has come in this economy that I HAVE to get back to working and I know he would be bored in a pre-school-daycare environment. Unfortunately for us, Private school is out of the question at the moment. Thanks again everybody.

The cut-off date where we live in Northern Michigan is Dec. 1, my son's birthday is Oct. 10, and he's in preschool this year, and will be starting kindergarten next year. He'll start when he's 4, but he'll turn 5 shortly after the beginning of the year. If I were you, I would talk to the school about the cut-off date and if the cut-off date is before her birthday, see if there is some way to get her into kindergarten based on her social and intelligence level.

My state's cut off is Sept. 30 and my daughter's birthday is Oct. 10. She too is very bright and articulate. I was thinking of sending her to a CA. school for kinder and then enrolling her back here in NV, but that won't even work. She is stuck in preschool again for another year. It's not fair, but nothing we can do. She doesn't even qualify for the school districts preschool program because she is so bright. UGH!

And in the state I live, the cut off is Sept 1. Anyone after that has to wait until the following year to register. My SS has an October birthday, so he would have to wait to start school. We found a program that started him in a 4 yr old program and then will graduate him into kindergarten, even though he wont be 5 entering the school year.

Quoting Christine:

Public schools usually don't make exceptions for kids with late birthdays, even if they are advanced. My suggestion would be to look for a school that will test your child to see if they are ready to start school or to look into private schools. You could let her sit out the year and try to find her a preschool program with children her age. You could also try to do more kindergarten cirrculum things at home with her.

I agree with this. I feel my son should start kindergarten next fall as well. But starting him in preschool this year he's in the 3's the cut off is september 12th, i think,  here and his birthday is The 29th of October .  and it's hard cause now he's 4 and it's not even half way through the year. But I would really listen to Christine on that. That will also tell you whether she is ready to start now or the next year. good luck.

Usually the cut off for Kind. is in Dec....It varies from Dec 1 to the 15th..as long as they turn 5 by Dec (fill in the blank) you can register them for Kinder. My daughter turns 5 Oct 9th and I just registered her for Kind. a few days ago. Check with your school district just to be sure.
