Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone has good advice on asthma treatments for 2.5 year-olds (other than prescribed inhalers that is). We just got in from a long night in hospital with a verdict of viral induced asthma, and although it is not a definite asthma diagnosis, my son Hayel has been put on an inhaler. Poor bubba HATES it & what's worse is that it's prescribed for every 3 hours... Any tips/tricks on how to get him tolerant of his spacer or anything I can to naturally to ease symptoms?

Thanks in advance! Kat

hi katerina i have 5 kids all asthmatic.on medication from the age of 2.the are doing fine.the meds have there place and are great but there is so much more. remove all carpet in house and if possible any pets keep at distance from kids .as much fresh air as you can in the house. reflexology can help mine found it so good that i then trained in how to do it and treat them myself. c salt rooms are great to .it really depends on what condition the lungs are and is it seasonal or allergy based . there is also salt pipes that can help but when bad the drugs work and are the safest way .kids go down hill so fast dont take a chance.with time things do improve and you will find out what the trigger factors are.good luck

My son has a kind of asthma where he gets excess mucus build up and it leads to bronchitis and pneumonia. He's been hospitalized twice and he's two years old. He has a nebulizer and an inhaler. It is sooooooo hard to see your child go through it. Eventually they get used to it though.

Thanks ladies! Some good tips... Somehow we have had amazing progress with the asthma & Hayel's inhaler, the doses are now reduced to twice daily & as needed & we have ditched the mask entirely as he is being a 'bi boy' and taking the inhaler directly. All it took was for him to see my father and grandmother taking their dose and now he thinks he is a part of some exclusive club?! I appreciate your help though & if/when we are put on a preventative I will go back to these ideas as I do feel treatment is better received through the spacer or nebulizer... xK

You're poor little guy! My little girl started out with that kind of asthma. The inhaler is tricky for the little ones to use. I found the nebulizer much easier, and they can do it while watching TV. I would call your pedi/family doctor and ask if they can write you a rx for the albuteral and for a neb that you can rent at a medical retail/rental place. You're insurance should cover all or most of the cost.

In the meantime, try to make the treatments fun. Make it a game. 'Lets see if you can take a bigger breath then me!" Heck if it works, I wouldn't be above bribery either.

Hey Kat,
My 5 year old is an asthmatic since he was 4 months old on a nebulizer. It's very rough at first getting them to sit still, but usually what I did was..Hold him in my lap, give him a toy or book, play with his hair, talk to him. if that didn't work..I would sit him at that table with a cup of juice and a snack, and sit by him. It sounds very corny, but it worked, and now he gives me hardly any problems at all...

i had to go to the hospital with my son last year right before his 2nd birthday and they gave him a nebulizer(sp) he didn't like it atfirst but the gave him a dinosaur mask(lol) to put over his face instead of the mask that comes with the nebulizer and hes fine with getting the breathing treatments when he needs it...but he only gets them when the seasons change really...i read to him while hes getting it or i play one of his cds and next thing you know it's over and he's fine....try one of those :)
