Chronic cough for 5 months now, what could it be?

Hi everyone, I have 2 sons. My older one is 3 years and the little one is 10 months old. I am worried because my 3 year old has had a cough for the past 5 months. The cough has been on and off. It usually gets better after a month or so and then it comes back after a week or two. I am so worried about this. I have taken him to the doctor and he has given him antibiotics twice because he thinks its a sinus problem. The antobiotics didn't work. I am changing his pediatrician on January since the one he has now seems not to care. Have any of you moms had this problem with your kids before? What was it? Any info will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Thats way to much, im a medical assistant and that sounds horrible...this could turn into asthma if not treated if is not a bronchitis...u have to act fast...persist ....b a annoying parent whatever it takes ...make it sound worst than what it really is. Does his head hurt? neck? those are common signs of a sinus infection and even if it was that by this he wouldve had problems breathing too...so i dont think is that. U need a doctor ASAP

My daughter had a cough for several months, a strong antibiotic took it away, but if your child has taken antibiotics, he/she may be becoming resistant to them, which could contribute to the problem. Coughs are the worst, but they sound a lot worse than they are!

my boys have bad allergies so when they play outside etc., I will notice them coughing within the next day if I don't keep allergy meds in them. When it does get bad we give them breathing treatments with a nebulizer and then they are better in a few days. They take singulair (Rx), citerazine (sp?) and muchinex every day/night; when they are coughing, the breathing treatments have albuterol and sometimes budesinide (sp?) in it. These two are Rx. I have really bad allergies and my husband has asthma. Hope this helps a little!

I am thinking asthma or he is allergic to something in the house. My step daughter has the same issue for the past 6 years of her life and they are finally testing her with asthma.

My son had a cough problem from last year. It would come and go. We tried all cough drops and home remedies but it came back again. Finally my paediatrician had suggested inhalers. We were very sceptical about that to start from such an early age. But she has prescribed something with almost no side effects. It helps him a lot. It came back again after a month but he gets relief within 2 days. It really feels good to see him better. Anitbiotics did not help him as well. If it is allergic or asthamatic, there is not point giving antibiotics

try 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder mixed with 1/2 tablespoon honey, thrice a day for 8-10 days.

Thanks to all the mommies who replied and gave me some advice and opinions. The new dr is A LOT better than the one he had before. I took my son in and the first thing she did was take x rays (his previous dr said they were not required) and found some liquid on his right lung. It showed it was mild pneumonitis. She gave antibiotics and now my son is doing much better. He still has a little bit of a cough but its mainly when he wakes up. She refered me to an allergist and will be taking him soon. Thank you mommies!

It's probably allergies. Post nasal drip. You're right about needing a new dr - antibiotics don't work for most sinus infections, they're usually viral. Plus, was your son showing any actual signs of infection? Fever, lethargy, pain? If not, the abx were an irresponsible move. Stupid dr should have KNOWN that!
Benadryl, Zyrtec, something along those lines should help if it's post nasal drip. But you need a doc for dosages. GL, mama!

It's not unusual for a child to develop colds one after the other, especially if they are frequently around other children such as daycare or school. However, if it is consistent for 5 months, then it's time to consider other things. Could your son have allergies causing him to cough or asthma? Does he get worse with physical activity? Talk to the pediatrician about asthma testing or allergy medication. Allergies can frequently cause asthma symptoms also.

My oldest who's now almost 15, had a chronic cough as a child, he ended up being diagnosed with asthma.
