Does anyone else have a child who gains weight really slow?

Hello, just read your post and was wondering what percentile your little girl is in, if you don't mind me asking? She's about the same weight as my son and the childrens hospital that we go to is extremely concerned with this weight and is wanting to place an NG tube to help him gain weight. Was just curious if your ped had any concerns? Sometimes I think they may be going over board and he's just small, (which runs in the family), but they make it sound like its a big thing.

My son is barely 20 lbs and he was 8 lbs 4 oz at birth. He's short, he eats like a horse, and is very active. He's been tested for a variety of disorders and allergies. Other then a slight iron deficiency he's healthy. My niece is 3 and barely 25 lbs and she's healthy. Your doctor's probably right that she's fine. I wouldn't worry. Kid's grow in their own good time. There's a couple of things that are likely culprits: genetics (for instance my son is out of luck because both my husband and I are short) and in general breast fed babies tend to put on less weight then formula fed babies. I wouldn't worry about it. My nieces doctor sent her to a nutritionist, who tried to put her on 1400 calorie a day diet. When that didn't change anything they finally figured out that she's just small for her age ( and finally took her off the diet).

My lil girl is still skinny as... 22months and can still just fit in a size 0... I buy size 1 n 2 tho coz i feel thats where she should be but she just isnt... her dad is skinny and i used to be aswell but dunno i think its just her genes, But my nephew is her size now n only 4 months old...

My daugter will be 2 in october and is only 16lb and 8 oz now. She was only 1lb and 7oz at birth but should be at a normal size by now. We just had a g tube placement 3 weeks ago and she is still not gained.

My daughter is tiny also and i was worried for a while because she is sucha picky eater but she is 22 months and she only weighs 24lbs but the doctor said she is okay so i just feed her a lot of health snack during the day in between meals and plus she is a busy body thats probably why she don't gain weight

My son was 6lbs. 8oz @ birth. 5 days past due. Now 22 mos. he only weights 24 lbs. But he's a picky eater. He only eats finger foods! The problem I have is finding clothes that fit him.

My daughter who is now 22 months is only 21lbs. She was 7lbs 1oz at birthand born 2 days before she was due. She has a cousin a year younger that is about one inch shorter and out weighs her by 2lbs. She is in the 3 percentile for her weight and 5 percentile for height. She is just little for her age. I took her to a nutritionist and she is eating normal for her age. Her doctor isnt worried either. I thinks some babies are just small. I like her being so little, I think it is adorable.

my daughter is tall and skinny! she weighs 22 lbs and is 21 months. She is so tall everyone guesses her to be almost three. She started walking at 8 1/2 months and is a very active little girl. At her 18 month appointment she had gained less than a pound. Her doctor said a lot of times kids weight hits a plateau for a while once they start moving. .

my little girl maddie was born 7lb 11z's and born aboutthe 25th centile. not too bad really. she is small now for her age and everyone does not seam worried at all about it, and she eats like a horse too. she still wants milk in the am, and has morning and afternoon snacks too boot. she eats good size meals. and i to get told she's small when ever i tell people how old she is and compare her to the other's her age at toddler group.
her clothes hang off her and i don't have to rush out like some mum's and buy the next size up, as she'll fit into it for at least another 2/3 months. so i'm saving money there! LOL
if your small in your family, just think of it that she's going to take after you. i think maddie is taking after my mother-in-law, she's under 5ft.

Riley is about 27lbs and 32in tall. I always thought she was average but then her sitter started watching alittle girl that is 6months younger than her ans is every bit as big as her. My brother's son is 3weeks younger than Riley and is about 10lbs heavier and 6inches taller. My oldest daughter has always been small for her age too though. She is 9y/o and is only 50in tall and 62lbs. Our pedatrician has always said that as long as they have healthy appetites not to worry about it. Some kids are just small. Both our girl are bottomless pits so I don't worry about it too much.

My daughter is very thin 23 lbs at 22 months, but very tall 35 inches...but she started out at only 3 lbs, so I think she is still catching up. As long as they keep gaining, even if it is only an ounce a month, it's fine. Active toddlers don't gain weight very fast! Just make sure you are giving lots of full fat dairy foods (yougurt, cheese, homo milk, etc) as they need this fat for brain development. Otherwise I would not worry...I just look at it is as saving money in the cost of clothes!!

My daughter gains weight slow too...She is 21 months and weighs 20 lbs..She is very active and also eats fine..If you are worried put her on pedisure..my girl is on it and loves it,doc suggested.

has your dr. done any blood work? my son was weighing small at his one year checkup. when they checked him again at 15 mos he still hadn't gained enough so the dr. did some bloodwork. it turned out that he has hypothyroidism and now takes zythroid for it. his weight is slowly coming up, but it could have had very bad consequences if we hadn't tested him. just something to talk to your dr. about.

I have a 21 month old that is 22 lbs...was 19lbs at 12 months. He is a picky eater, tall and sooo skinny. His dr was excited that he was 22 lbs....I'm like hello shouldn't he have gained more?

Hi, yes Zoe puts on weight slowly because she has always been so active. Now that she is past 1 year old I worry less and get her weighed less. She eats well and looks healthy and I worry enough about other things so I don't worry about her weight now. If they look healthy then no need to worry. Sx

yeah - my daughter is 21 months and only weighs 22 pounds. She was 5 lbs 11 oz at birth, but born 5 weeks early. i worry about how skinny she is, but she eats a ton! i just figure it's because she is soooo active! i wouldn't worry if the doctor isn't worried!

i thot i was only one in this,cause my daughter is 22mths and is just 22lbs,she eats well though,but she tends to loose and gain weight but her doctor said was no cause for alert,so i believe yours is doing fine too.

my daughter is 21 months and she weighs 19 lbs 6 oz. she still wears 12 months. my other daughter is the complete opposite she was 11 lbs at 2 months. But the doctors aren't concerned.

my son is 22 mos old and he's more than 30 lbs. His pedia said that his weight and size is for a three year old. Good for all of you, ive always wanted a bigger baby, now i have it, how i wished i didn`'t wished it at all. its an advantage to have a smaller baby i guess, first, its lighter to carry, not a hassle.. you can use longer you the clothes.. for me it would be an advantage because i'm a petite person and my son is big.. he's about half my height now at 22 mos old.. But for your case, if your baby is healthy and fine, its no problem..

Hi there... you have a tiny one as well. My daughter Madelynn was almost 8 pounds at birth and she is 21 months old now and is only 21 pounds. She is happy and health.. she doesn't eat much. My doctor is not worried about her because she has been consistent on her growth chart. At her 18 month check up she was in the 4th precentile for her weight. I have two older girls 19 & 16 years old and they are both very tall and slender as well. So as long as they are happy and health and the doctor does seem concerned. Enjoy getting to use all the clothes longer. LOL... that is one major advantage I have found.. :)

My daughter is almost 19 months and is still 19lbs. She has been 19 lbs since she was about 12 months. Doctor said that is fine because she is still getting taller and seems to be slimming out more than anything. She was 6lbs 10oz at birth and she has always had a very petite frame, just a little chunky between 6 and 12 months. I'm sure that everything is fine if the doctor says it is. As long as they are eating and "pooping" normally! :)

My daughter is 18 months and she weighs 22 pounds.She weighed 19 pounds for so long, I was a little worried.I babysit a little boy 3 weeks younger than she is and he weighed 26 pounds when before he was 1!My other daughter was always small, too. I also have 2 boys who were very chubby as babies, so I always worried about my girls.Now my older daughter who is five is as tall as a 7 year old, but she's skinny, so maybe that's what will happen with my baby.Her doctor says as long as she's eating he's not worried.She still wears 12 month old clothes.She's at less than the 25th percentile for her weight, but at about 50% for her height.I understand about people commenting on her size, especially compared to the little boy I watch.I always felt like she was alone in being a small baby until I read this.i would say that if the doc isn't worried we shouldn't be.We just have cute, petite babies!

My daughter was 7 pounds 1 oz and 19 inches at birth and is now 21 pounds 8 oz and 31.5 inches tall. She's in the 25th percentile for both. I'm not worried about it because both my hubby and I are small, but her doc really gets after me about making sure she is gaining weight! I keep telling her, the child is happy, healthy, eats everything, is always on the move, and is more than keeping up with developmental milestones, so what is wrong? Boy, do I ever wish we had a doctor more like yours!

My daughter was 7 pounds 8 ounces at birth and 19 inches long. Now at 18 months she is 22 pounds and 33 inches long. She looks so skinny. She eats ALL the time but only gains 1 pound every 2 months. She has always eaten well, she's very happy, and never stops moving. I have never been concerned about her size.

My son is in the 15th percentile for weight and 30th for height. Our ped wasn't too concerned. Neither my husband nor I are very big, so she didn't expect our son to be either. She just wanted us to offer him a lot of butter, fish, etc to build 'brain fat'.

My 18mo was 7lbs 9oz at birth and is only 23 lbs now.She really tall though so I think thats why she looks so skinny!Neither of us were skinny babies but my husband was real tall and skinny as a child/teen. That has to be it.I got her summer shorts out from last year that she never wore and they are perfect now!Size 9months! Its crazy, I know but I wouldnt worry!

My daughter was 8 lbs 3 oz at birth and at her 12 and 15 month check up she weighed only 20 lbs, but grew 3 inches taller. It really started when she started walking. My doc didnt show any concern, she may just be petite

yes my baby is all so 18 month old and she is 19lbs 12oz. Her doctor thinks its ok because i am small and my oldest child when she was small she did not gain weight untill she was like 8 years old. Now she is fourteen and is 120lbs. The doctor told me when laila gets about 2 years old then we need to worry. But she eats fine.

My 18 month old is always petite as well. She is 21 lbs 8 oz, and she is 31 inches tall. My little one is very active as well, but she was a porker at birth. She was 9 lbs, 3 ounces. She just gained weight very slowly. Her doctor isn't worried, so I don't worry anymore either. It took me until now to quit worrying about her size and weight.

oliver is very petit he is very active he eats well.when i last got weight he was 22lb and he was recovering from a bug dont worry if she is a happy little girl its ok i worried but when my health vistor as that he achive i stop worrying

I'm not sure what weight is average. Maddy is in the 25th percentile for weight and height, and 95th+ for head circumference. Everyone guesses her to be about 12 months old. I've met more kids her age that are 30+ lbs than 25 lbs or less. If you and your husband are both small, maybe she got your fast metabolism. I bet she'll be thanking you later on :p

Everytime I tell somebody how old she is, there like wow she's small. I feel like I constantly have to defend her size. I don't mind her being small at all, I think her size is adorable. I just worry that I've never seen a child her age, as small as her, who wasn't premature. I think 22 lbs is around average for an 18 month old, right? It takes my daughter like 3 months to gain like 12 oz. She's been that way since about 3 months.

My daughter didn't have problems with gaining weight until she started walking. Now its hard to keep weight on her, because she's such a busy body. She was 7lbs 4 oz when she was born (9 days past her due date) and she's 22 lbs now. She actually lost a pound between her 15 month appointment and her 18 month appointment. Her doctor (who she hadn't seen before and didn't have her medical records yet) obviously wasn't concerned since she didn't have her stats from her 15 month appointment, but when I mentioned she'd lost a pound, she wasn't worried at all. She said kids really start to slow down their weight gain after a year. I don't mind her being petite like her mom :)
