dawn, children as old as 4 or 5 might still need a nap. you of course will be the first to know if your baby doesnt need one any more, but a 17-18 mo old DEF needs a nap!

LUCKY. A nap is healthy. They say she shouldn't have a nap because then she will be up all night but in your case you have the best baby in the world. My daughter takes a nap and then runs around the house chasing the dogs until almost midnight. I wish my daughter would go to sleep that easy.

mine is exact same as your but goes down around 1 till 3 and is pooped by 7:30...babies need naps to grown and i wouldnt listen to anyone who told you otherwise your her mommy and you know best!!!!!!

My little girl who is 18 months old sleeps for 2-3 hours thru the day.
She normally goes to bed at 7.30 and sleeps til 7.30 the next day.
I think you should do what you are doing, if it works. Every child is different and don't worry what others say. She's your child after all!

dont worry 9 out of 10 times my little boy who is nearly 19months has a sleep in the afternoon otherwise if he hasnt then he falls asleep between 5pm and 6pm and thats himfor the night and then i feel guilty as i havent had time to spend quality time with him when i come home from work
they will let us know when they dont need a sleep

My lil boy is EXACTLY the same! I think that if they clearly need the sleep then let them.You are not doing anything wrong by doing that in my opinion.I also let my lil girl do the same until she got 2 the age where she wouldnt nap anymore

What time is your little one awake at? My son naps, usually for 2-3 hours and rarely 1.5 hours. He usually wakes up at 8 and then depending on the length of the nap and time he gets up it's around 8-9pm bed time. I think it's good for them.

my 19 month old goes to bed around 10pm..wakes a few times during the night gets up around 8 am naps for 1 hour late morning and 2 hours in the afternoon..if she did not nap she would be cranky and over tired so i make sure she naps..it is not a bad thing..

my son is 19months old a still takes a nap round the same time as your lil girl...i personally think there is nothing wrong with them taking naps they must need it...my son goes to bed around 6-7pm, im sure as she gets bigger she wont need to take any naps.

Hi, my litle boy goes for a nap, anywhere from 10-11am in the morning, he sleeps for approximately an hour, sometimes more.
He goes down at 7pm at night and sleeps through to 6.30am.

My older son just "stopped" having a nap one day. I mourned the loss of the hour in which I could do things such as clean the bathroom, paint a room or garden without him being in danger of horrors. :) I'm not going to rush my nearly 19mth old off having a nap, if he likes one, he must need it!

I think your little girl is the same.

i have a 2yr old and she still takes 1 nap and my 18month old takes 2 napes her morning nap afternoon nap and she still goes to bed at 7:00 or 7:30pm and sleeps for 12 hrs. i dont think there is anything wrong with ur right she wouldnt take one if she didnt need it!!

mine still takes a nap at 19 months, and her cousin, who is almost 3, still takes an afternoon snooze too.
Its totally normal. Who told you she shouldnt be?? thats strange!!

mine goes down around 1pm and sleeps til 230 or so
and shes usually in bed around 8 or 830pm and wakes around 8am. its been a good sched for us, so we've kept it.
sometimes, on the odd night out, she'll be up til 9 or 930, but by then she's very tired, so we dont do it often.

if your daughter HAD to stay up past 8, she would, she'd jiust be cranky lol

yes she should still be taking a nap and i would question the sanity of anyone who told you she shouldnt, they still give little ones nap time at pre school, thats at age 4. and it shouldnt like your little one has a good rutine. be hapy. as for the later bed time, yo may find that she isnt a late girl. my son gets up at 6 to 7 in the morning i wanted him to sleep a bit later and tried to put him to bed later, it back fired he would get up even earlier and be issrible all day. i find he goes to bed about 6.30 and gets up about the same time. and hes a happy little guy . and why would you want her to go to bed later lol that is you time after she goes to bed.

I have a 19 month old daughter. She wakes up around 8 am, has a nap at least by noon (and sleeps 2-3 hours!) and then at 9, I put her to bed for the night. I say, if your routine works for you and your little girl, then that's all that matters!! I don't think there's anything wrong with it!

I think that your daughters patterns are right on!!!!
My daughter Olivia is also 19 months old she has one nap a day also usually 11:300 to 1:00 or even as late as 2:00pm sometimes.
Napping at this age is absolutley crucial for growth and development.
my son didnt completley stop napping until he was at least three and a half although the naps did get later in the day and shorter in duration and eventually would only happen every other day or so.
As far as the bed time I also think she is right on trak!!!
My daughter is done by 8:00pm and so am I.
She starts her day early and we try and keep busy and get outside and do and see new and exciting things.
I honestly wouldnt push for her to stay up later, its not going to make her sleep in it could make her have trouble sleeping and it sounds like you have a good thing going on.

I have a 18 month boy and i run a daycare with ages from 18 mo to 5yrs. We have a quiet/nap time from 12 - 2. they all nap except for my two 5yr olds who watch cartoons quietly... i think they need a nap! I can totally tell a difference in behavior. They NEED it! I'm gonna encourage naptime until my son starts school, i think. I need that break too!

I think at this age children should still have a nap. My eldest still had a daytime nap up until she was almost 3. My youngest, who is now 19 months still has a 2 hour sleep in the early afternoon and still goes to bed at 7pm and sleeps through. So I think it is a good thing your little girl still gets a sleep in the day as they need it!

My 18-month-old takes a nap... if he didn't, he would be exhausted! They give kids naps at daycare, why wouldn't you at home? Allister gets up at around 8am (sometimes a little earlier), eats lunch at 11:30, and takes a nap from 12p-2p. We don't let him sleep any longer than 2 hours because then we would have trouble putting him to bed at night. He goes to sleep at 8pm every night.

My 2 boys are in a daycare facility, there they make the boys sleep from 12 to 2, which is a great idea... my boys sleep better at night, their concentration is better when you try to teach/talk to them

So everyone has already told you that your baby should be napping, and I will tell you that I completely agree. Our daughter is in daycare and naps every day from 12:30-3pm. Now she doesn't always sleep that long, but for those who wake earlier, they are encouraged to lay quietly and read a book. It's important that they have downtime during the day. The few times we have been out on the weekend and she didn't get a proper nap, it was horrible. She was fussy and too tired to eat. She wouldn't respond to anything and so she was in bed by 5:30pm! Whatever you decide, it should be what works best for you and your family.

Children take naps up to age 5! They even have nap time in preschool I believe.... who would have told you that?! That is crazy lol. My daughter is 19 months and sometimes goes a day without napping (she will only sleep if I drive around) and I find that crazy! But she goes to bed now that the sun is out longer, around 9!!! Used to be 730! lol and then she wakes up at 6...anyways, just keep letting your daughter nap...there is no reason not too and obviously she needs it!

hello my 18 mth son has a nap about 11-12 for hr or 2 hrs but he still gets up in the night anything from 2-10 times lol.he sometimes has a sleep about 4-5pm too.& most times is in bed after 8pm too all the best shaz x

I agree with Deborah!! A nap is crucial for kids until at least 3 years of age! My daughter is 19 months and naps around 2pm till 4pm. She wakes up at 8am and goes to bed at 9pm. Try pushing her nap a bit later in the day by 15 minutes. xox

My 18mo old twins still nap twice. They get up about 7am and go down from about 10-11am and then nap from about 3-5 and go to bed between 8 and 9pm. I am sure they would go down earlier and sleep a little later if they only took one nap. But if 2 keeps them happier during the day I can't take it away.

Hi, my 18 month old(reggie)still has a nap every day!! its usually straight after his breakfast and he can sleep for a good few hours!! He will then go through till 8 or 9pm and have his bath bottle and bed!!! I think they will sleep if they are tired and i wouldnt listen to anyone saying otherwise! You know your child better than anyone else!!

my lil one naps for 2nhalf hours n sleeps 11hrs at night. there is definately no way he could go all day without a nap. i would enjoy the fact they still have a nap gives you chance to get stuff done. im dreading when my son stops wanting one lol

My lilttle girl is 18 months and she takes a late morning nap just like your and she is usually in bed at nite between 8 and 8:30. I see nothing wrong with it and really I think they need to keep taking a nap for a long time to come.

Infants toddlers and kids under 6 all need to have a nap every day!!!! Who ever told you not to giver her a nap must have been misinformed!!!

I would say by 12 months a one to three hour nap after lunch would be better then a morrning nap, around 1pm works great! Then do your normal activities when she wakes; Play time... dinner... playtime... bath...books...bed. Also having an afternoon nap, a bed time at 8 or 8:30 is perfact then she will also sleep in in the morrning a little longer thats always nice!!!

I have used this same schedual on three going on four kids ( youngest at 6 months still has an AM nap) and it works great!!!

Thats is pretty much the schedule my daughter has and she is happy and healthy....babies are people also and will pretty much make a good schedule of their own as long as they are allowed to do so. If your child is happy throughout the day and is tired by eight then sounds to me like she has a great schedule going to get her through til a decent bed time.

my little boy is 18 months and he still goes down for a nap in the morning around 10:30/11am and will sleep for 2 hours, which not only helps him greatly but it helps me too. He still needs that sleep, you can see when he gets tired and you can't keep him up because he gets clumsy and grumpy so it wouldn't be fair. He is then bathed and ready for bed by 6.30 every night, 7 at the latest. xx

My little guy is 18 months old and he takes a 1 1/2 to 3 hour nap a day and then is in bed by 8pm...they are still little that they need the sleep because before you know it they will be 16 and you won't be able to get them in bed...so my thoughts on it is if they are tired let them sleep. They need it to be healthy and grow up big and strong.

Oh sure...your 17 month old needs a nap....at least we need the break to re-charge ourselves :) My lil one who is 18 months takes one nap for about 2-3 hrs in the afternoon for most days...some days she naps only for 10 mins so that she can drive me crazy!

My son also loves his sleep.Crystal P my son is just like yours. He will take a nap from 1-4 hours. Now not everyday he will take longer than 2 . But a stay at home with my son, so i dont have to worry about him being on a day to day routine

Who the hell told you she doesnt need a nap? they do, my 18 months old does and I thought alot did until 3 years old. Not sure you can get her to stay up later without her getting overtired.

Children this age DEFINITELY need a nap as well as an early bedtime. If my daughter naps for less than two hours, she goes to bed for the night at 7pm. They really need their sleep at this age. Remember that they still have nap time in Kindergarten!

My 17 month old son LOVES sleep once I get him to go to sleep. Thats the challenge. He usually wakes up between 8 and 9am and goes down for a nap around noon. Then he can sleep between 2-4 hours. I think thats a little long, but if I wake him up before he wants to get up he'll still be really cranky, so I let him sleep, which doesn't bother me cause I can get a lot done in that time. He is a sweetheart once he wakes up and goes back to bed around 9pm. Nap time is a great thing for kids, especially if they are super active like my son.

My 3 1/2 year old still takes naps. :) Kids need naps & mommys need for kids to have naps as well. It sounds like she has a great schedule. My kids do go to sleep a little later than 8pm, but they don't get up until 8am so... it's whatever works for your fam.

I have an 18mo old and during the week he naps from 12-130 and another nap from 5-6 and goes to bed at 830. If he doesn't get in his power nap around 5 he is miserable by 7:30. He sleeps all night! On the weekends he sometimes takes 3 naps all ranging from 1 hour to 1 1/2 hours. He is just a sleeper, however he is also very active and is non stop while he is awake. I work in a preschool and our children there are still napping up until the age 5. They definately need there sleep...that's when they grow. That's what the nurses in the NICU told me when I had my son. So your are perfectly fine and absolutely normal for your little one to sleep and be on such a great schedule!

Everyone I have talked to says there is no need to break them from naptime until before they begin school. If your child is napping its because their body needs a break. Nothing wrong with it at all. =)

No naps? My daughter starts actin a fool when she's tired so she takes a nap everyday. She basically set up her own schedule so she wakes between 7-8a, takes a nap sometime around 11a, for any where from 1-3 hours, and goes to bed at 7p, 8p at the latest.

I can't believe someone gave you a hard time about a 17 month old napping. My son is the same age and he takes a nap every day after lunch. He used to take two naps until he was about 12 months old and then he got down to one nap. He naps from about 1 until 3 if I am lucky. Somedays he only makes it an hour. And then he goes to bed by 8 pm and sleeps until about 8am. Children need a whole lot more sleep than adults. Web MD answers the question about sleep needs for children depending on their age. They say children 1-3 need about 12-14 hours of sleep a day and still need at least one nap. Check it out. It will help answer your questions.

I dont know WHO would say a 17mo doesnt need a nap! Even 4 yr olds in pre school get nap time! My son is up about 7am, nap at 12 or 1 and up by 3. Lunch, dinner at 6:30ish in bed by bathes by 8pm!

Well, I was going to say YES YES YES, they need to nap!!! But I think you have gotten the message. I'm an older first time Mom also, but there are LOTS of books out there, and I did alot of reading before Reace was born. Also, talk to your pediatrician!! Reace naps about 2 hrs a day, "nighty night" is around 7, and he wakes between 6:30 and 7 a.m. It's good for them to be on a schedule.

I'm sorry but all little childred need naps, thats how they grow. I have a 3yr old who some days (depending how busy our morning was) will have about an hr from about 2pm. I laso have a 18mth ol that goes to bed about 12pm for 2hrs. I don't push for my 3yr old to sleep have one he just sleeps if he wants too watching tv mostly.
