Baby not drinking enough

Ok so here's the deal. . . my son was breastfed but has had bottles while I'm at work since he was 8 wks. He recently weaned himself (about a month ago) and would no longer take my breast because I had a lower supply and I think it frustrated him that it came out too slow. He was taking 5 oz of formula every 4 hours during the day so he got 4 bottles a day. He is starting to take less and less formula now. Sometimes I can barely get 2 oz in him at a feeding. He just doesn't seem hungry. . . it's like he's completely uninterested. He eats his baby food fine. He just doesn't want to drink. I've tried just using a cup and everything. I have even used a medicine dropper for his last feeding because I don't want him to be hungry at night. He's not getting any extra baby food, everything else is the same and he was eating the formula fine at first so I don't think it's that. He does have acid reflux and is on Axid for it. But like I said it's not like he's crying like it hurts, he just turns his head after a couple of oz and refuses to drink more. It's so frustrating and the doctor is NO help. I've taken him twice. We have a new ped because my husband lost his job and it's the only one in the area that's taking the access. Needless to say I HATE them all there and really miss our old doc. They all seem incompetent. Anyway. . . . any ideas?! I'm desperate! I'm so worried he's not getting enough formula!!!

Kids in general are so stressful huh?! Even when they aren't REALLY doing anything wrong (aka being naughty) they are the consumption of most mental and emotional energy. SOO much to worry about! I feel like it goes from one worry to the next. Perhaps I'm a bit dramatic. LOL But I feel like it went from being pregnant and worry about miscarriage and health, to SIDS worries and worrying about the amt of breastmilk he was getting (since there's no real way to know), to formula and first time eating real solids worries (aka choking worries) . . . and next it'll be SERIOUS babyproofing and the stress of him becoming mobile and finding something I missed!!
Ahh the joys of motherhood :) Wouldn't trade it for the world though!

I'm glad I'm not alone, I called the Dr. for my little one monday for the same reason. She is no longer interested in her bottle. she is only drinking 8-10 oz of formula per day, but eating solid food fine. she even loves her cheerios and other craker type snacks. the Dr said she should be drinking 24-28 oz per day. they said to try differt bottles cups anything to get her to drink, nothing worked. I am going to try to spoon feed her the formula because she takes food off the spoon fine. I also thought maybe she doesn't like the tast of the formula anymore and she loves blueberries, so i added blueberry puree to her bottle , still nothing. she does not have any teeth yet, so maybe she is teething like it said on other posts. the dr. wants to see her in a week if she does not improve to check weight, and make sure she is not dehydrated, they also said it's important for the formula because it has more vitamins than the food that she needs.

Since you've tried all the different bottles (been there too), you could try different temperatures. My daughter won't drink any formula if it's too cool. The other thing is to change her schedule a bit and try feeding her when you are putting her down for a nap. I rock my daughter until she's almost asleep and pop the bottle in...sneaky I know but sometimes it works. The creative things we come up with out of desperation! I think this is why I get so offended when some bf moms make nasty comments about moms who formula feed....they have no idea stressed out we get when our babies don't drink their recommended amount of formula!

He is teething. . . he has his bottom 2 and is currently working on what I THINK is 2 top ones. I'm not sure he is getting both but it sure looks like it. I guess that could definitely be why. LOL Guess I wouldn't want to suck much on something if my teeth were hurting either. He does get pretty mad once he rejects it and we keep trying to put it in his mouth. Poor kiddo. Thanks girls. At least I know where it's coming from now. I hope that it doesn't last 3 months Nancy!! I'm not sure what I'll do if it does!! Poor tyke is already not peeing as much as he used to. If you get any more ideas on what works let me know please! Thanks soo much!

It's not everyday for 3 months otherwise I'd be living in a padded room by now. She'll go about 2-3 days where she's a handful and then she'll be fine for 4-5 days and then we start all over again. It's been going on for a while now so you can imagine how anxious I am to see those front teeth finally erupt!!

My daughter has been doing the same thing since she started teething at 2.5 months. She has her 2 bottom ones and has been working on the top one for about 3 months now....grrrr. I've tried new bottles with different nipples, singing, rocking, playing Baby Einstein DVDs, you name it I've tried it! It's so stressful because you worry that they are not getting enough and the Dr. say as long as they don't lose weight there is nothing to worry about......gee, that helped!

Here is what I did recently and it's helped a bit....I only feed her solids 30-60 minutes after her bottles so that she's a bit more hungry. I also decreased the amount of solids I give her as formula is more important than solids right now. That helped a little bit to increase her formula intake from about 3oz to about 5oz per bottle but she still has off days where she goes on a formula strike.

This week however my mom discovered something interesting.....my daughter wants to hold her own bottle and will drink a full 6oz (as long as it's the short skinny playtex airvent bottle). She'll lay in her boppy pillow and guzzle away. It's weird but she seems to hold it in a way that bothers her gums less and drinks more. It's worth a try. Good luck!

has he got teeth yet?? my bubs can eat baby food fine but formula he wont drink for too long because the teat irritates his gum (hes currently got 3 teeth and getting a 4th). my bubs is a pretty bad teether as he will scream if i put the teat near his mouth again so sometimes i can barely feed him formula until the tooth comes through, unless i take like 5 hours to feed him!

just wondering if ur bubs is teething, maybe the teat is irritating his gums, but not as to such length to scream the place down :P
