Do any moms feel like their hair is falling out?!

I have recently started shedding profusely and it won't stop! I am afraid I am going to go bald soon. Thank God I have very thick hair because I swear you could make a wig out of all of it that has already fallen out. I didn't know what the heck was causing it at first. I changed shampoo and conditioners and stopped straightening it thinking that perhaps I was being too harsh with it and it didn't help. A friend of mine had a dr. appt the other day and she said in a magazine in the waiting room she read an article about new moms losing some of their hair because their estrogen levels are evening out now that they are no longer pregnant. Does anyone have any more info or personal experiences with this? Or am I the only balding new mom in the world?

So glad I saw this, I was about to post the same question!! I think mine started falling out around the 2 month mark. My son just turned 4 months and it's still falling out like crazy! I guess it's way over due to schedule an appointment with my hairdresser! She warned me about this, but I'd never expect it to be this bad! My husband was so weirded out when he saw the clump of hair after my shower yesterday!

dont panic! your hair normally falls out after having a baby, specially if you have stopped breatfeeding or the number of feeds have dropped (due to solids). i have had 5 babies in 5 years and my hair falls out everytime. after a couple of months you will see all the new growth. (all the tuffties!)

Hi,

You are not alone with this problem I can assure you. Many mothers have this problem with their hair falling out after the child is born. During the pregnancy hair & nails usually grow very well. So did mine :) But now when my daughter is nearly 6 moths old my hair is falling out...It couldn´t come in any worse time because it´s 1,5 months to my wedding with my fiance :( I would not like to be a bald bride :P I went to the pharmacy and asked for help. I got the advice to tart taking vitamin B. I have now taken a multivitamin that melts in a glass of water every morning for 4 days. It´s packed with vitamin B and other vitamins, and my hair doesn´t fall out that much anymore.

I have two cats, but now I'm the one shedding and leaving hair everywhere! My hair ends up on all the furniture, it clogs up the vaccum, I even found some of my hair in my babies diaper yesterday!

I am glad I am not the only one. My hubby is tired of seeing my hair everywhere. Now I have an explanation. When I dry my hair in the morning the floor is covered, the drain in the show has been getting clogged because I am loosing so much.

No worries I am experiencing that as well, you`re not the only one! My hubby gets rather annoyed with finding my hair all over the place as it`s almost to my waist!!!

this is happenig to me? I didn't now this happens until i read this? Because i have to much estrogen in my body, i am now suffering from weak knees and cuz of having too much estrogen it only took me 3 weeks to fall pregnant. :)

OK - you all know we lose on average about 100 hairs a day normally. Well, get ready for this. Post-partum - it is NOT unusual to lose about 500 hairs a day!!!! Think of all that hair that didn't fall when you were pregnant - now they are! I never had the thick, luxurious hair that I was told about when you are pregnant but I certainly didn't have the shedding which was nice. I started shedding again about 4 months after Isabella's birth - it's calming down now but it was so annoying finding my hairs on her blankets or in her hands that she had just been sucking on. xox

Carolynne, did you have a c section. Ionly ask because that happened ( the back pain and stomach issues) after my second section. It was on my third section that they found i had a lot of scar tissue and it was removed durinng the section. Im happy to say, that while i still get a little back pain before my period is now greatly reduced.

And the hair loss thing. After number one and three i lost a lot of hair a few months after their births, though iit was thick and glossy during the pregancy, with number two i lost a lot of hair ( and bizaarly my eyelashes!!) during the preganancy.

The wonders of pregnancy!!!;-)

I loss alot of hair when I was pregnant. It seemed to get a little better after I had my son. But I do have other weird symptoms that I am hoping they will go away. I know have extreme back pain when I have my period, and I have stomach issues in the mornings... my body really changed after the baby.

They say it should only last 3-6 months so don't panic. I am going through the same thing right now. It has given me a reason to shop for some cute hats. Thank God it is not 80 degrees outside. lol

It's normal =) I've been 'shedding' for about a month now. It's because when you're pregnant your hormones make it so you don't shed as much. (your hair gets thicker) So after baby, you loose all that hair that 'should have been' lost all that time! You won't go bald, and aren't going bald.

i feel you hun,
i thought i was also going bald for some weird scary reason. With all the research i did about pregnancy and babies, for some reason i totally skipped this chapter. i had no idea this was going to happen.
I think about it all day long. My hair is everywhere in the house (and i have long curly hair).... it has taken over.
Plus i have lovely dents in my scalp (hair line). its so depressing, but hopefully it will stops soon.
BTW, Yes, i have been taking hair/nail vitamins (another boost won't hurt)

Hi there. im on my third child, five months old, and am losing hair like you wouldnt believe!! It happened with all three to the exyent that my hair line has receded somewhat. With regards to it stopping when your periods return...well i got my period back at 4mths with each child and i exclusively breast feed ;-(

On a brighter note, it did stop before i got bald patches with the other two ;-)

Its a shocking amount of hair im losing at the moment!!

Quoting Jenna:

I have been shedding profusely since about 4 months post partum. I heard that it starts when your period returns due to the hormonal change. I didn't have a full period yet, but I did have spotting starting at 4 mos. post partum. Anyone else find this was the case for them?

I haven't had my period back, not even the spots. Moms in my country (Indonesia) said that the hairfall occurs the same time as your baby started to salivate. So true for me...

I'm at that stage too, and I had to cut my hair short to help lessen hairloss. I think it started at about 3 month mark.. my baby's 4 m.o now.

I am losing hair also. I became very scared once i seen the comb full of hair. At about 4 1/2 weeks i started losing hair. I will be happy when it stops. So much hair came out at the hairdresser!

My son is 5 and a half months and I've been losing ridiculous amounts of hair for a couple of months. But it's starting to slow down now. I've heard it kind of stops around 6 months postpartum. Just buy some good Draino!

I am literally pulling out clumps in the shower!  I'm glad to hear that a trim might help it (and me!) look better =)  I really hope it grows back b/c i have anxiety now that a bald spot on the back of my head is going to start slowly appearing with all this hair loss!

Yeah, about 3months after i had my daughter Emma i started losing my hair. I totally thought i was going bald too, but its totally normal. I don't think i'm losing as much now though. So its getting better.

Yes about 4 months after having my daughter Kara I started losing so much. I thought it was maybe stress, then I remebered while I was pregnant reading how you lose less hair while your pregnant and then after words you lose it all so then I stopped worrying.

with my first born i started losing it around the 5-6 month mark. when i had my next hair dressers appointment i mentioned it, and they said the same as jennifer mentioned. they gave it a good trim and that really seemed to help. i am now currently going through the same thing again at the 3-4 month mark after my second son. its quite scary to think at how much we can actually lose and still have a full looking head of hair.

It's totally normal, while your pregnant you don't lose the normal amount of hair that we all lose everyday so it's just catching up! It'll come back. If you're really concerned there is a product called Nioxin (a salon only product) that can stop hair from falling out as well as regrow it!
