Anyone making their own baby food? Any suggestions on how to do it the best way and how to store it?

I am.....I got a food processor/steamer in one and some ice cube trays to store it. The food will last for 3 days in the fridge and up to 3 months in the freezer. I just started this week with feeding her solids and was not going to freeze any until I found out what she likes. I started with sweet potato....I am just wondering what to introduce next....

Hi Caroline,

I just read something on it that say to start w/your "oranges and yellows" as they are sweeter.. so carrots, squash, sweet potatoes, then move to greens (peas, beans).  I also read - which I don't know if I will do.. but they say to introduce pureed meats and alternatives even before veggies.  So, pureed chicken, turkey, lamb, lentils, chickpeas, egg yolks.  This seems weird to me but anyway, just wanted to throw that out there.

The 2 methods that I have heard of are the frozen cubes (freezing in ice cube trays - you can actually get ones specifically from Baby's R Us.. and the other method is the drop method.  Spoon onto cookie sheet and freeze , then place in containers.  I haven't started anything other than cereal, but I am excited to and will be making my own!

I use a hand blender (wand type) and that makes it really easy, and a fast clean up too! I've done the brown rice cereal and sweet potatoes.

Try introducing avocado. It's really high in nutrients and mild tasting for baby. I'm hesitant to introduce too many sweet veggies / fruits since I'm afraid my 5 month old won't want to eat some of the blander more nutritious foods.

Sometimes the purees get really a lot thinner / waterier after being in the fridge or frozen, so I keep so Earth Best Organic Brown Rice Baby Cereal on hand to thicken it up a little with. It's instant so it helps a lot on a tight time frame.

I make all mine at home - get yourself a mini blender and  what i find works really well is to store purees in an ice cube tray and freeze it.
