Yes, sleeping bags/grobags worked well for us. His hands are also free so he can suck his thumb when he wakes in the night.

I have never had a swaddle thing. But I use to swaddle her all the time. She would kick her way out of it every time. I just quit using it. I put a blanket over her and that's that.

I had similar issues when my daughter was just a few weeks old...she would 'break out' of her swaddle and then wake up crying because she wanted to be swaddled. So i took to 'double swaddling'. I use just a receiving blanket (one of the bigger ones) to swaddle her and then use a swaddle blanket from Babies R Us on top of that one. Works for us and she sleeps very soundly from 11pm till 6am every nite. Wakes up to feed at 6am and then continues to sleep till 9 - 9:30.

I had the swaddle blanket with the velcro closure too, you can find them at Babies R Us, and my son used to kick out of the bottom once he got bigger. I switched him to a sleep sack and he loves it. I think he like that he can move his legs more. He's such a kicker!
