my son is 13 months old and he has an older sister that is 3. Just recently he started eating odd things that his sister never really did. He is eating the inside of books, newspaper and anything of a paper substance.... should i be concerned? i have googled this (probably not the best idea lol) and it says that it might be a sign of early autism..... any suggestions or ideas?

My son does it too. I think a child of 13 moths discover the world by tasting shapes and textures.

My daughter is also mad for paper products/cardboard & the like. She's mad for it & it's driving us nuts. I just assumed it was a stage, toddlers are known for putting just about anything into their mouths.

I always know my little lady's up to something when she goes quiet in her play pen, 9 out of 10 times she's found one of her books and is making a meal out of it...

We have to keep paper and kleenex away from my son too, he loves to eat it. I'd say it's normal. Never Google! LOL.

Totally normal. My twins will put anything in their mouths. it is their way of exploring something. Board books are a personal fav of my daughter. She has even chomped on some dryer lint. I wouldn't worry about it.

my nearly 14 month old, does exactly the same, any book, envelope, magazine etc he can get his hands on goes straight in for a chew!!! my guess is its a combo of teeth and exploring!

my 13 month old does the same thing with paper. She chews on any scrap that she can get her hands onto. I'm not concerned because my mom said I did the same thing at that age, and I turned out fine. :) I'm thinking because the paper is like 2 textures, one is hard and crumbly when its first put in their mouth, and then it turns soft and soggy.

My son does it too! He loves to eat tissue. All my neices and nephews did too. My friend son is 17months and tried to eat rocks. They don't know any better as of yet so I don't think its much of a concern at this stage.

My son is 13 months old as well and he likes to try to eat paper too. I dont think its anything to be concerned about. I think its teething and they like to try to chew on anything they can get their hands on including paper. I never ever thought to be concerned about before.

Paper mushes around in your mouth when you chew it and tastes interesting.

Why wouldn't a baby exploring his huge new world enjoy that sensation?
