How old should a toddler be before potty training could start? I figured it was a year or more off, but I just found out a friend of mine is buying a potty for her 15 month old. It sounds crazy to me, but is it possible to start already? My friend says her daughter is asking for it / leading her parents to think she could be ready.

we were thinking about staring to potty train we thought our son was maybe getting ready, but at our 15 months check up today I asked our ped and as soon as I mentioned potty training he said No to early don't even bother thinking about it yet, so we are gonna wait a bit and try maybe 18 months??

My baby Kasia (October 13, 08) IS potty trained!!! We occasionally have an accident through the night but that's to be expected! We got her a potty chair for her 1st birthday. I'd read many articles and made up my own way to potty train... I left her potty chair in her toy corner for about a month so she could familiarize herself with it. Then I moved it into the bathroom and for about a month, when I'd go- she's go with me and sit (fully clothed) on her potty. I'm a firm believer in following the farmer almanac signs and when the sign for potty training came- we started REALLY potty training. We'd go every 20 to 30 minutes and read books while she'd sit on the potty. Funny thing is- she will NOT potty in her potty chair, we put the attachment on our toilet and that's where she goes! I'd sing funny songs to her about putting her pee pee in the potty and when she would go, I'd scare her half to death by jumping up and praising her! She also gets 1 M&M for a #1 and 2 M&M's for a #2! She'll grab her bottom and say "eeeeew momma pee pee" and we take off running down the hall! So, so proud of her! But sad that she's growing up so fast! Remember- age is just a number, watch your child and follow their lead! They'll tell you when they're ready!

don't even think about it yet, push a child too early and it stores up problems for later, don't even bother until at least 2 and a half

It is TOTALLY possible. My daughter started using the potty at 14 1/2 months. We put her on it around the time that she usually has a BM and also right after she wakes up. We taught her the sign for "potty" and we hope that she'll start using it soon. We are far from being potty trained, but she is comfortable using the potty and gaining confidence so that is all I can ask for at this point. She has been using the potty sucessfully at least twice a day for the past two week.

Vidhi, I just saw your post about the 3 day potting training method. Google 3 day potty training and you will find the site. You do have to pay for the on line book but it isn't expensive. Good luck!

My daughter is 15 months and has a potty which she sits on but hasn't shown any serious interest in using it. I was told that there were certain milestones for them to reach like being able to pull down their own pants and being able to sit still for a few minutes at a time. I'm planning to let her start giving me the cues that she's ready.

My 15mnth old son shows no interest in potty training. He would stay in a stinkie diaper as long as I'd let him...dirty boys...lol. My mom told me boys were much more stubborn than girls, so maybe she's right. A friend of mine told me about the three day potty training method, but according to that the child should be 22mnths old, so not sure if that is an option for you or not. Maybe read about it and see what you think.

It is never to too early to introduce a potty....what could it hurt? like Hanna Crum said, don't rush it, but put it out there. My mother told me she had me and all my siblings potty trained BEFORE 2 years...15 months is a great time to start! I have already started my little guy. He has been successful only the one time, but he understands the concept.

Our son will be 15 months on the 26th and we've started potty training. The only reason that we started so soon is because our son was telling us that he has to pee and or poop so I see no better time to start then now :) He has gone 4 times now on the big boy potty! We got the attachment that hooks onto your toilet rather than the little potty, makes for one less transition. In my opinion if your child is telling you they have to go to the bathroom you better take advantage of it! Good luck :)

My son was born october 17 2008. HE has recently started telling me "mommy peepee" or "mommy Poopoo" and running to the potty. That was my que to get him his little potty. I did the same thing with my daughter and the exact same age. I kept taking her and putting her on it. She seemed scared so i didnt push it. I didn't want her to be scared of using the potty so I just left it out in the living room. 2 weeks later she went over to it, took her diaper off and used it. she has been using the bathroom since then. She is about to be 3 in Feb. I am hoping the same will go for my son but we will see. I definitely dont thing it is too early for the potty training. Go for it. good luck

At my son's 1 year check up my doctor said to go ahead and start, I don't see why not if you feel you want to try it out. I haven't done it yet but was fully planning on it however I found out that you can potty train in 3 days guaranteed (search 3 day potty training online) and apparently it is suppose to work well so I thought why not give it a try but they must be 22 months + and he is almost 16 months. So I just decided to wait to try that out. I am not in a rush and I don't think he is 'ready' he isn't showing any signs. But it doesn't hurt to try if you want to! Good luck!

I am interested to see these replies as we having been thinking since just before xmas that our son may be ready to try and see. any time he sees a toilet he goes and stands in front of it and says pee pee pee could just be he is repeating what he's heard us say while at the toilet but who knows we are thinking of purchasing a potty this week and see what he thinks if he's not ready then we put it way and try again in a couple months. Good Luck
