My son was born Oct. 8th and I have started feeding him rice cereal. I am wondering when to switch to fruits and veggies, and then once I do, do I continue with the cereal? This is my first child, and I'm pretty clueless about all this stuff. I asked the Doctor and she was little help. What and how are other moms out there feeding their little ones solids?

I started my daughter on Rice Cereal at 4months. After a week I started vege's at dinner time. One vege at a time. After about 2 weeks I started giving her Fruit & Rice Cereal for breakfast. Veges she has had: Pumpkin, Carrott, Potatoe, Parsnip, Brocoli, Cauliflower & Sweet Potatoe. Fruits she has had: Apple, Pear, Appricots & Banana. Since she turned 6 months on 3rd April I have also given her Yoghurt & Custard. I make all my own foods.

My son was born Oct.31st and I started giving him cereal around 4 months. My doctor told me it was ok to start him on solids at 4 months. He is now just over 5 months and he gets 1 jar of stage 1 fruits in the morning and I mix two teaspoons of rice cereal with it and then he gets a 6 oz. bottle, another bottle in the afternoon, and for dinner he gets 1 jar of stage 1 veggies mixed with 2 teaspoons of rice cereal and then a 6oz bottle afterwards, he also gets another bottle before going to bed. He sleeps until about 6:30 in the morning. If your baby seems like he/she is ready then try the stage 1's by slowly introducing them. Good luck!!

It's time for a visit to the book store. I found a fab book yesterday called "The Baby's Table", it has sample meal plans and recipes and takes a lot of the guess work out of figuring out when to intro what foods. It took me about an hour of looking through all the books on the shelf at the book store before I found this one. It's pretty idiot proof which is exactly what I need right now.

I had started my daughter on cereal last month and had to stop because I was told to switch her formula from Soy to Milk based and she was also teething. Her bottom teeth are in and she's doing 1/2 and 1/2 on Soy/Milk (I'm doing the switch gradually) so it's back to rice cereal for this week. I'll be starting barley cereal next week and the week after that I'll be adding a fruit/veggie puree in the afternoon. Apples, bananas, sweet potatoes are great starter foods. I plan to make my own baby food so I'll be starting that this week when I do up my weekly meals. Hope this helps.

My son was born Oct. 28.  He gets oatmeal cereal for breakfast.  We tried the rice, but it wasn't as filling for him.  For the rest of his meals, he gets whatever food he is eating that week.  This week we are trying peaches.  We've had sweet potatoes, applesauce (loved it), carrots, and peas.  I also give him water to drink while he eats.  Then if he is still hungry later, I'll give him a bottle.  But he usually doesn't need the bottle for 2 hours or so after he eats his fruits/veggies.

When we went to our 4 month check up the doctor said we could start rice cereal then at five months we could do fruit and veggies . I will usually give him fruit or veggies in the morning at 10am then some boob after then around 2:30 some more boob then he will eat cereal or fruit or veg at about 6:30 then some more boob at 8:30 or 9 then he goes to bed.

When you give your baby fruits or veggies you want to stick to one for a week then move on to another one . Its to see if they have an allergy .

Stick with the baby cereal for a week or so then you can start adding some pureed veg or fruit to it or mix it in with baby's usual milk. My daughter was also born on the 8th but I started solids with her at just under 5 months because she was so hungry and not sleeping well. When you start introducing fruit and veg stick to the same type for a few days then move on to something else.

My daughter was born Oct 18th, by 4 months she was only having 4 bottles so we started solids to see how she'd go, tried the farex and she loved it, so tried each veggie on its own and she took to all of them. within 2 weeks she was on 2 solids a day and now she is on 3 solids a day, I think if she had her way she'd choose solids over bottle. I make all her own food, once a week I boil up lots of different veggies then make different combos of 3 veg, I also boil and puree fruits for her. I buy the heinz custards & jellys and thats her deserts.

So many mums have told me she's too young to be on 3 solids already but I'm going by my daughters needs and she is thriving on them...

My daughter was bor on Oct. 11th and she is eating carrots, peas, sweet potatoes, green bean and rice cereal.  She didn't like the rice cereal at all and is LOVING her veggies!!  I am also pretty clueless about the feeding but I did hear not to give fruit before veggies becuase once they taste the sweet fruit they may refuse veggies.  I'm going to wait awhile before I give her fruit.  My daughter actually bangs the table when I'm done wanting more veggies!  it's been a great experience and I'd try some veggies.  Try 1 for at least 3 days to make sure he doesn't have a reaction and then try the next veggies.  It takes awhile but soon you can mix them together for a totally new flavor!  Good luck!  Get the camera ready too for the first feeding...too cute!

If you feel he is ready and he is taking to the cereal well (not pushing it all out and good with the spoon) then I say give it a try. My son will be 6 months April 2. I started him on rice cereal Feb 21 over a week before 5 months. He didn't like the rice cereal so after 5 days I did oatmeal which he loves. I tried the barely too and he spit up more so I stopped after 2 days. March 5 I started him on the first stage heinz veggies. I waited 3 days between each to make sure of no allergies. He took to them all really well. Then followed with the first stage heinz fruits. He has done really well with them all and is a big eater!

He is formula fed and gets 5 bottles/day - 24-30 ounces/day (sometimes he will finish a 6 oz bottle and sometimes he will leave an oz or two). So in the morning when he gets up I give him a 6 oz bottle & 2 tbsp of oatmeal cereal. About 3 hrs later he gets a 6 oz bottle. At around noonish he gets a 4oz bottle and 2 tbsp of a veggie. About 2 1/2-3 hrs later he gets another 6 oz bottle. Then around 5ish he gets a 4oz bottle and 1 tbsp of a fruit. At bedtime at 7 he gets a 6 oz bottle.

Some moms give the cereal 2x/day morning and night. It all just depends. We see the doctor Friday for his 6 month check up and I want to go over it all with him as eventually you introduce meats. It is confusing!! It all depends too on your baby.

Have fun!!
