My son (19 months) started school on monday. He has been crying and his nose has been running and he drools. Do you think it's a good idea for the teacher to wear gloves?

I'm a nurse and Danielle is correct. The gloves would not do anything to prevent disease transmission, which I'm assuming that is the purpose, because they would need to be changed after dealing with each child. With that being said the teacher might as well just wash their hands or use sanitizer, which is great in a pinch when the children won't let you take the minute to wash your hands. Gloves are not effective in this situation, The only time I could see them using gloves is when diapering, which should still be changed after each child. I would talk to the administration about it and find out exactly why the teacher is wearing gloves all the time. If that is unsuccessful I would look for a new day care. Good luck.

I agree with Danielle 100%. The only time they should be wearing gloves is during diaper changes.

My son's daycare wears gloves during diaper changing only.

In my opinion (which may be wrong!) I think it's ridiculous for the teacher towear gloves. First off, for them to actually be preventative for germs, she would have to change the gloves like every 10 minutes and would obviously go through a LOT of gloves. She'll just end up getting germs on the gloves instead of her own skin. And the downside is that while she has GOOD bacteria on her skin to help prevent and fight germs, the gloves don't. Also, if she's wearing gloves, she probably thinks she's safer than with bare hands which means she won't be as cautious about prevention- for example, she may be less careful aboout not touching her own face or something similar because she thinks she is safe with the gloves on.

All in all, I would speak with the director of the center about your concerns. They may or may not have a certain policy about gloves but I'm sure if they are a respectable center, they will certainly here your concerns and do all they can to accomodate you. If they refuse and you still don't feel right about it, find a new place. It's not worth it if you don't feel your son is safe and well taken care of.

Don't get me wrong ladies I didn't explain the story fully about my son and the teacher with the gloves...Here's the story: My son (19 months) started school on Monday. He has been crying and his nose has been running and he drools. My son was working one- on- one with a teacher in school and I noticed the teacher had gloves on. I questioned another staff member who claimed gloves are worn so they could work better and not have to stop and wash their hands. No one else wore gloves and I found it impersonal. So I ask the question in this forum to get some feedback.

Not really sure why you think the teacher should wear gloves. it is very normal at that age for them to have runny noses and drool. I am sure they are aware of the proper hygiene practices and do not need to wear gloves. Do you really want your son to get cuddles etc from someone who is wearing gloves rather than skin to skin contact.

Umm no. Why would she need to do that? If you're worried that your child is sick and is going to spread germs he should not be going to daycare.
