Hi, my Son has slept through the night since he was 3 months old. (12 hours) Apart from a few nights when he was teething he has been a perfect sleeper. But over the last 3 weeks, he has woken up 2 or 3 times a night and i always find him sitting up. All I need to do is lie him back down and he goes straight back to sleep. It seems he sits up in his sleep and then wakes up disoriented. Does anyone know if this is a phase he will grow out of? Or is it to do with more teething?????

Yay, my son has now learned to lie back down, given he lies down in the on all fours position and i often find him like that in the morning. I had a doona on him because it was winter but as the nights have been a lot milder recently i have just left him in his sleeping bag, and now he doesn't wake at night anymore, well he might but he doesn't let me know.

Im glad i read this cause my son does the same think he's been doin it since he was about 6 or 7 months old now he's 10 months old and still does it sometimes he even seems to talk in his sleep and crawl. Im glad it seems like its normal cause i was gonna ask the doc next time he went cause his dad's side of the family has a history of sleepwalking. I guess i can relax some cause it looks like its normal.

Yes! my son just started doing this. He has been crawling for about 3 weeks now, he will be 11 months on Sept 2 and since then he has been sitting up during a nap or at night sometimes. Or when I put him down for a nap, if he doesn't want to nap he will sit up. I think we just have to be patient until they learn to lay back down themselves.

my son also does this, he is 10 months, i am in the same boat as you trying to figure out how to get more sleep, by not having to get up so much.

Thanks everyone, he's still doing it, plus its winter here in Aus so he can't get himself back under his doona. But am hoping very much that he will grow out of it soon.

i think its a habit as new skill/ excited he can sit up.. just let him be and let him try to figure out how to get back down. maybe let cry for 10mins then check up dont pick up straight away as prob getting used to u coming in and now its a habit as he knows how to get ur attention.

My son does this all the time! He moves around so much at night which wakes him up.

ahahaha..it's farny to read all the comments about this. We finally get them to sleep thru the night without night-feeds and then they go and start waking again coz they're sitting up..LOL silly lil' Duffa's..
Holly's been doing this for a little while now, altho she doesn't "cry" as such, more calls out, and the more we ignore her, the louder she yells out - & cranky too..Lmao. I don't know how her poor Brother sleeps thru it (they share a room..), prolly coz he's too busy snoring his head off..LOL.
I'm just hoping it's a phase that she's going thru..which I'm sure it is just that..and it will pass soon enough like everything else. Hang in there..you are not alone.

My son did this for a couple weeks right when he learned to sit up on his own around 6-7 months. He moves a lot when he sleeps and would sit up on accident and it would wake him up. It didn't last long though once sitting wasn't new to him anymore. He still sits up in his sleep every now and then but he just lies back down and it doesn't seem to wake him anymore.

My daughter has been doing this since she was 4 months or so! First it was the crawling position then the sitting position. Kind of like they are sleep sitting!? The DR told me just to lay her back down that it is totally normal & hopefully she will grown out of it.. well she is 10 months old still doing it! Now waking in the middle of the night crying for me! hopefully your son will grow out of it! Just keep doing what your doing!

it's all part of development. I remember reading somewhere that when babies learn a new skill that they practice it in their sleep. But teeth are such a painful ongoing thing that I use that excuse for everything :) and everything is just a phase (I have used this one for several things - it keeps me sane!)

Hi Nina,

My daughter started doing this shortly after she learned to push herself into the sitting position. I think she was just very excited about the new skill and prefers to be upright rather than on her back. She still does it, but unfortunately for me, does not always go back to sleep so easily. It could be that he is waking more frequently due to the teething and then does what he does when he is awake (sits up). He will eventually get that he can just lay himself back down but until then... mama to the rescue.
