During his first year checkups, my son's wieght was always at the 75% range or above. At his one year checkup, he had dropped to the 50%, which didnt concern me at all. And then at his 15 month checkup, his weight had dropped to the 15%. This kind of concerned me, as i had noticed he seemed to be eating less, but i had read toddlers eat as much as they need and just snack often. Now his pediatrician wants him back for a 6 week followup, (next friday) and I'm nervous he hasnt gained enough.

I guess my question is, which is the correct portion size for a 16 month old. I have read "half or a third of an adult sized portion" but I feel like i always struggle with this for myself anyway, so i want a more correct comparison. the size of an orange? a grapefruit? this size of my fist? etc.... anyone have any insight on this?

how do i know he's getting enough to eat?

As a parent this would concern me too. I have two older boys (6 and 4) and my daughter just turned 17 mo. Boys were always normal and yes at the 1yr mark they were more interested in trouble than food. My daughter however is tiny. At her 15mo check up she only weighed 18.7lbs which is like the 5th percentile. But she has been in the 5% since about 9mos. I try not to get too worked up about eating habits ( my boys are poor/picky eaters too) but she NEVER eats. Refuses oatmeal anymore, Eats her brothers' pop-tart crusts for breakfast, maybe a piece of cheese for lunch or 5or 6 green beans for dinner, Seriously! Thats it! She's perfectly happy drinking all day though. I don't let her have a cup until after I offer food. We still have her on formula too. (She had a corn intolerance which I think she is growing out of.) Even though its VERY expensive I'm afraid to take her off b/c she IS so tiny. Anyways my pediatrician said to add calories and protein to her day (and get her off of formula) add Carnation Good Start to her milk. Maybe you could try that if he's not a big eater or at least ask your pediatrician about this. You might want to ask your Dr. to refer a nutritionist. I am thinking about doing just that at my daughter's 18mo check up.
Wish you all the luck!

Hmm that's a tough one. My daughter is a BIG eater. But a basic day goes alittle something like this. Breakfast could be a sippy cup of milk (half) bowl of oatmeal (1 pack) 1/2 peice of toast, and some fruit, could be 1/4 cup berries to a full banana. I still feel toddler jars on occasion so she eats half a food jar and half a veggie jar then a dessert, fruit cup, apple sauce, any type of fruit etc. Dinner she eats what we eat. Usually about half of our portion maybe a bit less. She also snacks about 3x a day on things like mum mum toddler cookies, handful of raisins, cheerios, crackers, fruit, cheese etc. She has a sippy cup a day, not often finishing it but it's available to her. She has a 4oz bottle at bed, soon will be taken away. Often times she will eat what she eats and then some. But again, she is a big eater and LOVES food.

Good luck
