My 16 mo old has had a cough for a little over a month. It is mostly at night while she is sleeping, but occasionally during the day. She has no other symptoms, except for a runny nose that comes and goes. She went to her well baby check up and is fine, so what could it be? Our dr. said that we could use benadryl to see if she has allergies, and we did for a while. It didn't seem to help. The dr. also said that in babies this young, there isn't a great way to check for allergies. HELP!

my oldest got tested for allergies at your lil' ones age. Get referred to an pediatric allergist anyway. Medications can take 2 wks to 3 months to take effect. Allergy medication have to be taken on a regular basis if it'll work. My boys took children's Zyrtec (my youngest son started allergy meds when he was about 6 mos). What's great is a little Robutussin or another expectorant to help with the cough. If you don't want to go the med route than if she doesn't sleep all crazy than prop her head end of mattress with a pillow. Maybe she coughs because her throat/mouth is dry so try a humidifier in her room. Hope she feels better.
