when can you give baby butter?

My daughter is 10 months on Friday and her doctor said she can butter then if we wanted to give it to her. I prefer not to and I've made her meats and veggies with olive oil and will avoid butter as long as I can.

I usually don't give my children cheese or butter, as they are both dairy, until they are over one year old. My 8 month old doesn't have any teeth yet either, so I can't imagine giving her anything that is not pureed.

my daughter is 8 1/2 months too, and she can eat up some gerber crunchies, puffs, and yogurt melts, i also got one of those pacifier feeding things by munchkin, and u can put whole pieces of chicken in it and they can chew on it and my daughter loves it, it might be something for u to look into :D

I've made my daughter a grilled cheese and used margarine. She loves it but I don't give it to her often.

In our house we use a spread called "Nutlex". It is like margarine I guess. It is used in the Cardiac Dept of the hospital. Tastes like margarine. Anyway - we have used this in different foods I have made for my daughter since 4 months. Only a small amount of course & not often. But have most certainly used it on sandwiches I have made for my daughter.

My ex husband used mayo to crust the grilled cheese. But I also saw your other post and this is your "1st" baby...A great book is What to Expect...the first year. They also have when you're expecting, what to eat, the toddler years. Very informative. Everytime I read the books I learn more (oldest will be 9 yr in Oct; 6 y/o and 8mo old).

I have also made baby food from my son that had a small amount of butter in (to saute onions etc in) It won't do any harm but of course like any new food item just watch for any reactions, and yet unsalted for sure. Also to the comment above about cheese, it is advised by the health nurses/doctors where I live to give them cheddar cheese/cottage cheese and even cream cheese is okay is small amounts, so they won't choke. These little guys are pretty good at gumming things. As far as the hard cheese goes I would only give very tiny bits or just shredded pieces. I have also been told and read that giving a grilled cheese sandwich to them at this point is okay!! Let us know how she liked it!

My dr said at 10 months but also insists olive oil is much healthier and better for them. My daughter is 8 months and 2 weeks and when I make her vegetables and meat, I blend them with olive oil - have been doing this since she was 6 months.

I Haven't done the toasted sandwich yet, i'm going to do it on my day off. So i will probably make it on Sunday or Monday and then i'll let you know.

elizabeth is right. olive oil would work too. once again, a small amount or else it could wreak havoc in the diaper if she hasn't had it before. the same would go for the butter too. good ole' oils :)

Small amounts of butter is fine for them at this age as long as it is unsalted. Most health visitor recommend margarine as it contains less salt.
