When does a baby start to roll over?

Hi, my daughter is now 5 months & still has not rolled over. She can roll over onto her side, but HATES being on her tummy, so I guess why would she bother going any further. When put on her tummy she is too cranky about being there to try & roll back. I am not too worried, and after reading all of these I am more sure I don't need to be worried. Em loves to stand up more than anything & only requires one hand on her for balance, so maybe she'll walk before she crawls (gosh I hope not, I'll never keep up lol...)

My daughter is now 4 months old and rolled from front to back at about 3 months....mainly I think because she HATES tummy time and was desperate to stop it on her own! She rolled from Back to front completely for the first time last week. She mainly just rolls to her side though.

My daughter was born on October 21st and she just rolled over on Sunday. She is 4 months and 1 week. She can only roll from her back to her tummy, she can't roll from her tummy to her back yet.

My son (born on the 25th) cannot roll over. At first I did not have concerns, but when I took him to his 4 month check-up the Dr seemed a little concerned that he is lazy. I guess the concept is, they will not really be able to sit up until the muscles have formed in their backs from rolling over.

Since that appt I have been working on his tummy time with him, which she said would help. In the two weeks I have been working with him, he has learned to roll on his side, but still cannot fully roll over.

I agree with you Amy.  I also am a mom of 4 and they all rolled at different times.  I think my oldest was close to 6 months until she started to roll, yet my 2nd was 2-1/2 months when she started rolling.  Alex was born on the 31st and has only rolled once last week but hasn't done it since.  He will do it when he's ready.

I wouldnt be worried all babies roll when they are ready. I am a mom of 4 and they all rolled at different times I have one that never did and never crawled she just started walking instead and still to this day dislikes being on her stomach and shes now 12. My little girl has not rolled onto her tummy yet but loves to be up right in her saucer and jump arouond. It's ok befor eyou know it they will and youll be that excited mommmy with the camera ready for all of it. Oliviah is almost 5 months and shes just relaxing and smiling not rolling as I call it. got a love it.

I wouldnt be worried. My Bella baby was born on the 3rd of Oct, but didnt roll over yet. I ve put her on her side and she is trying to go to her tummy, with a little support, she dies that, but not on her own. Every baby is different. And it doesnt matter, because they are all gonna walk and talk and crawl eventually. :)

My son brandon started to roll at 10 1/2 weeks he was born oct 24th. He has not gotten to the point of when he rolls on his tummy from his back that he can roll back on his back from his tummy, he gets very frusterated that he starts to cry and fuss and barry his face into his play gym  mat or the living room rug where ever i put him down .

give him time all babies are different, mine was born on the 14th of oct and is just now attempting to roll over...I just help him out a little and on he goes. I bet by 5months he will rolling all over the place!

My daughter was born on the 14th, and she has rolled a few times from back to tummy. She has only done it while laying on my bed. I think the mattress is like a spring for her. She will not do it laying on the floor.

My daughter (born on 19th) was about 11 weeks old when she rolled from her back to her tummy. She beat my son by about 2 months! They all develop at different rates but all catch up to eachother in the end so I wouldnt worry. Boys seems to be a bit lazier lol : )

Lexie was born on the 5th ans at 2 weeks she was rolling from tummy to back, and at 2 months she was rolling from back to tummy.  Our 2 year old son was the same way at her age.....

Lexie is rolling all over the family room.  Her big brother loves to watch her roll!!!

Maddison has not even tryed yet and she was born on the 12th. Every baby is different so I would not worry x

My daughter rolled over both from back to tummy and tummy to back at 3 mons and that was at least a couple to 3 months earlier than my other 2 did

My little girl will be 4 months on the  27th- she does lots of rolling from side to side, but has difficulty clearing her arm to get all the way over to her belly.  With the SIDS guidelines and less time spent on the tummy, rolling over may come later.  She'll get it soon!

My baby girl was born on the 19th and rolled over from her tummy to her back at 2 1/2 weeks.  She never stopped doing it.  I would say at 3 months she started rolling from her back to her side.  She doesn't like her tummy so she doesn't roll all the way over to her tummy.  I think this is really early though.

My son was born on the 18th so he will be 4 mos tomorrow. He rolled over once about a month or 2 ago and he hasnt done it since. He rolled from belly to back. I think it scared him when he did it so he tries to avoid doin it lol. But dont worry about it. Every baby is differnet. My oldest son who is 8 rolled over at 4 mos my 4 yr old daughter rolled when she was 2 wks. But dont worry too much about it. Your baby will do it eventually..

Owen first started rolling from his front to back at about 3months. At 4 months he started to do back to tummy but only does one side. I have always gently encouraged it during play time and when he does something I applaud and smile so he feels rewarded. Although, now that he can roll we are having a lot of trouble with day time naps as when I put him down he rolls around and around getting his arms and legs caught in the cot slats and making himself really overtired. The pediatrician told me that rolling over is a very broad milestone. Some do it earlier than 3months others don't until 6months. Some people recommend using toys to encourage them to roll to certain sides but this doesn't and never did work with Owen, but may be worth a try. Although I am sure he will do it when he is ready anyway.

Parker will roll from him belly to his back. He started like a month ago or so. My older son however didnt show any interest in rolling either way until like 5 months or so.

It just depends on the baby. If there is any motivation to roll, or if they are even at that stage where they want to get around. My son has been rolling over from stomach to back since he was 3 months old, however, my nephew is 8 months old and still has no desire to roll. Don't pressure your child into doing things too quickly. They will do it on their own time.

My son started rolling at 6 weeks! but they're not really supposed to till 3-6 months...so I dont think its anything to worry about...just cherish the time while hes not rolling, once they start they never stop!

My baby was born on the 2nd. She's rolled onto her side a couple of times but not all the way over yet. She's really been trying to sit up for quite a while now and is getting better at it. She likes to stand too. Of course she can't do it alone but pushes with her legs so that I hold her up that way :)

My nephew didn't start rolling until 6 months and he's a completely normal 2.5 year old now. My 15 week old hasn't even tried yet.

My boy was born on the 30th saw him do a full roll once. But apart from that he can only go from tummy to back sometimes. TRy putting ur bub on its back on a gentle leaning surface (nothing dangerous) like sideways on the couch. I think my son mastered the roll by the gentle gravity toward the back of the couch and i would help him as he did it.

hi there, no need to panic, my son was born on the 8th october, and he's only just learning to roll on his side he gets really frustrated and thats as far as he gets at the moment...itll take time but let your baby learn in their own time thats what i did with my first child and shes already running around and wanting to walk everywhere and shes only 15months.

It is clear that all babies develop at different rates. My son is 16 weeks now and hasn't rolled over unaided yet. I'm not concerned, I reckon he's just going to do it when he's good and ready ;) He does roll to his side, just not all the way over and he, like your little one Betsy, also hates tummy time. I think it's good to keep trying new things out with the little one, but not to feel pressured when others' babies seem to be doing different things at different times. 

Keep us up todate with your son's new achievements though!

My daughter born on the 15th rolls around the room and thinks it is the funniest thing when I walk back into the room and look for her  the challange is keeping her still. Cherish it while you can cos once they start there is not stopping them.

My son rolled over once a couple of weeks ago (he was born on the 12th).  He hasn't done it again so I think it was a bit of a fluke.  I think rolling over is supposed to happen in the 4 th month so probably anytime now.

My son is 4 months doesn't really show any interest in rolling over. Sometimes he rolls to his side, but that is about it. I did dream today during nap time that he rolled over. The pediatrician didn't even ask about rolling over so I am not going to worry about it yet!

My son rolled over at 14 weeks and my daughther did it at 12 weeks. Both of my kids went from their back to their tummies first and now she is 4 months old tomorrow and rolls over all the time. You put her down on her back and turn to walk away and she is already over on her tummy and then back over again. She will move around the entire living room by rolling over. It is really funny to watch. I wouldn't worry though but ask your doc next time you take baby.

My son rolls only with help, but hates tummy time. I think you shouldn't worry until closer to 6 months. Usually rolling over and sitting up occur very near each other. Good luck!
