My little boy will be 6 months on April 2. I started him on rice cereal Feb 21, followed by oatmeal cereal, then started the first stage heinz veggies I believe it was March 5, followed by the first stage heinz fruits. As of today we have been through the first veggies/fruits (allowing 3 days between each new one). He showed all signs of being ready for solids and took to it all really really well. He loves it all except for the rice cereal so I only give him the oatmeal.

He gets 24-30 oz of formula/day. I give him 2 tbsp of the oatmeal cereal in the morning with a 6 oz bottle. I give him 2 tbsp of a veggie in the afternoon with a 4 oz bottle and then a tbsp of a fruit late afternoon (5pm ish) with a 4 oz bottle. He has a bottle in between and a bottle at bedtime.

Im not sure his weight yet (he gets weighed on Friday at his 6 month check up) but I know he is over 18lbs! He is a big boy, but a healthy one. I always get comments on how big he is, however I don't think he is abnormally big. His daddy was a VERY large baby, weighing 22lbs at 3 months strictly BF. I think he just has some of his genes lol. If I feed him less he would be hungry. I feel im feeding him proper but just want to hear what others are doing etc!

Thanks :)

My babe is a few days shy of 6 months, we still BF, she's not ready for solids. We're skipping cereal and going to family food. Isn't that how we did it in the olden days before the big companies invented baby food we "had" to feed our kids?

I mostly breastfeed my daughter (born 10/15), however I do give her 1 or 2 4oz. bottles of formula a day. Plus, once a day I give her rice cereal. That's it for now.

I have been breastfeeding my son since he was born, and he will be 6 months old April 24, 2009. I have been slowly introducing him to solids since his 4-month checkup. I have given him rice cereal mixed with my breast milk, but it didn't seem to agree with him too well. I stopped giving him the rice and only recently gave him some peas, just to see if he would like them. He seemed to like the taste, but the texture bothered him. He spit them out after a few spoonfuls. I still nurse him almost exclusively, but over the last week he has shown much more interest in the foods that adults are eating. Now that he can sit up on his own and is interested in solids, I think I will introduce them to him again very soon. I'm not sure if I will feed him the rice cereal again. Instead, I may go straight to the veggies. I'm not going to give him fruits right now, as the pediatrician has said that giving him sweet fruit before blander veggies may cause him to reject the veggies alltogether. I plan to make my own baby food since the jarred stuff not only has preservatives, but is also expensive. I hope this helps!

My daughter will be 6 months on th 6th of April. She nurses 4-5 times a day and has the heinz beginner fruits and veggies(she does not like the peas, lol) twice a day and I mix them with the organics rice/oatmeal cereal. She is lactose intolerant so has 4oz of soy based formula right before bed. And she nurses 1-2 times during the night. She started out just over 5 lbs and weighed 12.5 lbs when she was 5 months. Don't worry about you baby being on the bigger side. If he is hungry, feed him. You are doing fine. Most babies thin out a bit once they start moving around a lot more. Just because they have a chart on what they say most babies weigh at certain ages doesn't mean you are doing anything wrong if your baby is not with the chart. I actually don't know a single baby who has followed the chart exactly, lol. You know your baby best :)

my girl is 5 and half months she is eating rice cereal and is now onto barley( not to fond) and here, canadas guide recomends giving meat after cereal and im not really agreeing with that but our public health nurse says you HAVE to give them meat after cereal or they will never like it.

i gave my older daughter veggies and fruit first and she hates meat so im not sure who to belive. but i cant see a little baby digesting meat very well ether.

Hi Leslie! My little guy didn't care for both the rice or the barely and with the barely I noticed he would spit up more during the day so I stopped after two days. He loves the oatmeal so that is what I give him every morning.

I was the same way about the meat, I live in Calgary and the sheet I got from the nurse said it was ok to give meats or meat alternatives or veggies! I went for the veggies as I wasn't comfortable with giving meats right in the beginning.

He had his month check up yesterday so I asked the doctor about giving meats and he said to go ahead now that he has been through all the first veggies and fruits. Since he did so well with those meats shouldn't be a problem. So last night I started him on Turkey and Sweet Potatoes. I have been using the Heinz beginners and now onto the 6 month stuff. He loved it! I plan to also make my own stuff so in a couple weeks I will try my own pureed chicken etc.  Yeah I don't know how true that holds that they won't like the meat. I know people who have given fruits first and their babies still loved veggies, however I didn't take that chance and started with veggies first lol.

I would just try meat again a bit later and hopefully she will like it then!!

hi tara, my baby girl will be 6 months on april 5th, she is having 32oz of formula a day and gets 3 solid meals a day maybe with a piece of fruit or rusk in between feeds, she gets yogurt or farrax for breakfast which would be about half a baby food jar and then for lunch she will get either half a jar or full jar of veggies or custard then for tea she will have a full jar of veggies which is home made by me which consists of, steak, pumpkin, potato, carrots and brocolli. she weighs 7.6kilo. Her bottle feeds are at 9am, 1pm, 5pm and 9pm and she has solid feeds at about 10;30am, 1;00pm and 6pm.

hope this helps you.

Thank you ladies for your comments! I took him to the doctor's today for his 6 month check up and discussed this with him as well and he said that im doing everything right and heading in the right direction! I feel better knowing that a lot of others are somewhat feeding their little ones the same as well and that my doctor has now confirmed that all is good :)

My son is 5 1/2 months and he is on 3 meals a day. He has his 7 oz bottle in the morning then late morning he'll have baby porridge and 4 oz of milk, then for dinner he'll have pureed veg and pudding ( normally purreed banana or mango ) and juice and for supper he'll have more fruit and juice, then before bed he'll have another 7 oz bottle. He loves his food! I try him on allsorts and He's taken to it really well. I was worried I was giving him to much but if he didn't want it he wouldn't eat it :-)

My daughter Emma is 5 months and 1 week. I started feeding her solids about a week before she was 5 months. We started on rice cereal and i just started her on sweet potatoes. She gets rice cereal in the late morning about 2 tablespoons and then for dinner she has about a tablespoon of veggies. Then throughout the day she has about a total of 24 ounces of formula. At her 4 month check up she weighed 13 pounds 2 ounces. I think now she might be about 15 pounds, but not sure.

My daughter is 5 and half months. I started with Rice Cereal, but that was not a big hit. I then gave her sweet potatoes, carrots (those were a big hit), oatmeal, bananas (not too fond of those), peaches (loves it mixed in oatmeal), pears and peas. She eats 24-28 ounces a day of formula and I feed her solids once a day, usually in the evenings with her bottle. All in all, I think it's going pretty well.

Mackenzie has just started to taking rice cereal aswell as a 200ml bottle. Sometimes he woul;d eat all of his cereal other times he didn't want it, which i found frustrating because my eldest son was 3 months old when we had to feed him rice cereal as well as his bottle, he was really hungry!

My kids are both very different when it comes to feeding time.  Mackenzie will feed about 3-4 times aday, whereas dominik would have maybe 6 bottles a day and his rice cereal.  It's what works for your baby, if he's hungry, feed him, there's no point in starving him, it just won't help either of you.

I think you are doing the right thing by feeding him when he obviously needs it. keep up th good work!

My little girl is 5 months today. I've been feeding her solids since 4 months. I skipped the whole rice cereal step, she would have nothing of it and i was told it was okay to do that. As of now she has eaten carrots, peas, squash, and sweet potatoes for veggies. Pease being her absolute favorite, and i hear that is a rare thing! For fruits shes had pears, apples, peaches, and the rare time bananas but she doesnt really care for those.

I usually breast feed her for about 10min first thingt in the morning and she will then eat about a 1/3 of a jar maybe a little less of veggies. Later in the afternoon a little fruit, with breast feeding again. And the evening she'll do bout the same amount of veggies again, plus breast feeding. I think I have a bit of an oinker on my hands!

The last time I had her weighed was about a month and a half ago and she was then an ounce short of 17lbs. Tomorrow she goes and gets weighed again, so we shall see whats going on then!
