Extremely Restless Sleeper - Any Tips?

My son is an incredibly restless sleeper after a certain point in the night. He'll go to sleep (generally late, after fighting me for hours), be out and calm for about 3-4 hours, then start flailing his limbs and making a lot of noise while remaining asleep for 3-4 more hours. I've tried waking him up and feeding him; he'll go back to sleep, but start flailing again almost immediately so I'm assuming his restlessness is not due to hunger. Occasionally, I'll put him on his stomach and watch him, and it will calm him down briefly, but he starts up again within an hour or so. I know that I'm prone to nightmares/vivid dreams, and that older babies will have night terrors, so I'm wondering if it might have something to do with that (thought I'm not sure what kind of nightmares a 3 month old can have - endless empty bottles? attacking teddy bears?).

This wouldn't be so trying if he wasn't keeping me up all night, but I'm a very light sleeper. I'm curious if anyone else is having this problem.

Sorry Paige, don't really have any suggestions other than to keep trying different wrapping techniques... I presume you've tried the ones where you can wrap their arms in loosely so they can still move them but can't get them up to their face? By the sounds of it yours needs a bit of a straight jacket!!!

Our son HATES having his arms wrapped but will tolerate the rest of him being wrapped... we found this calmed him down in his sleep and now we use the sleeping bags instead. As long as he is warm enough he seems to be okay. Is there a chance yours is getting cold? Could you try a sleeping bag so he can't kick it off? (Apologies if you've already tried this one too!)

my son is very restless as well. during the day if I'm not bouncing the bouncy seat with my foot he starts to get restless in his sleep. in his crib at night he does it do in his sleep. he's snort and grunt and move his arms and legs and this could go on for ever. I also tried swaddling but he just doesn't stay in it. we just found out this week that he is lactose intolerant and basically I had to stop breastfeeding cold turkey. he basically spent the first 2 1/2 months of his life in pain screaming and yesterday and today he's a completely different baby. so maybe things will get better sleep wise. could it be your LO just is gassy? my son also scratches his face a bunch in his sleep or while fighting his sleep. hope you find something that will help and I'm going to keep checking on here for help too!

a suggestion for you try giving him a bath before bed using Bed time baby bath, then a massage with bed time baby bath lotion or oil, this has helped my 2 1/2 month old, and now i am only waking once a night. goes down about 8ish sleeps till 5am ish

@Carley - Heh, no. He's like a little Houdini. Even with the specific velcro swaddlers he finds a way to get his arms out. (Kind of makes sense; my great-grandmother was Houdini's first cousin.)
