sleeping through the night/swaddling?

I have 2 questions really:
How many moms have babies born in Oct 2010 that are sleeping through the night?
How many people are still swaddling thier 4 month old?
My son is a big baby and started sleeping from about 7pm until 2-3am around 6wks old. Now, for the last month or so, he goes to bed around the same time, but wakes around 11 and then again at 12 and then again at 1 (when we finally feed him) and then he wakes again at 4 and then again at 5 for the day (when we feed him again)
Tips/Tricks to getting him to sleep longer/not eat in the middle of the night?
Someone told us yesterday that a goal should have them to be sleeping through the night w/out eating by 4 and a half months...any thoughts?

Thanks

My daughter has been sleeping a solid 8 to 10 hours every night for the last 2 months. AND no there is nothing wrong with her contrary to what the lactation consultant told us! I have been finding that putting her down twice a day for 2 hour naps (each) during the day she sleeps really well at night, but she is also a lot less fussy during the day. Sometimes more sleep is what a baby needs, at 4 months everything says she should be sleeping 15 hours a day, well she sleeps 18 hours usually a day. She is always swaddled (mainly so she doesn't knock the soother out of her mouth) but for the first 2 months she hated being swaddled, now she won't sleep unless she is swaddled!

I went to the doctor thinking she was not getting enough at feedings, which he said she was getting more than enough. She was gaining weight and went from under the 50th percentile to over the 50th percentile so she was eating enough. I finally figured her crankyness was due to being tired. I try to get her down for naps and bed before she is overly fussy, the earlier you catch it, the easier they go down.

I have also heard that feeding them solid foods before 4 months increases risks of childhood obesity (possibly up to 60% more likely), so as long as your baby is gaining weight, don't try to feed solid foods to early... just try napping a few times during the day. AND keep the nap times routine, no matter how young routine has been a God send for us!

We also have enrolled in swimming lessons, and you would be amazed at how tired a baby gets after a good 40 minutes in the pool!

ONE MORE THING... baby is now overly stimulated by everything, so try and keep the room for naps and bed time dark and quiet so they have nothing to distract them from the goal... which is sleep! Good luck with everything!

OMG, how I love it when people try to set goals for babies - it's a load of BS, if you excuse my language. Every baby is different, and if one sleeps through the night at 4 months, the parents should be grateful for that. My older daughter slept through the night at 6 or 7 weeks, but she wouldn't sleep much during the day, and she could not be left to herself even a minute without getting VERY fussy. My younger daughter is a very easy baby, very content, always smiling, but she wants to drink at least twice each night. She slept longer and longer each night until she was 2 months old, then there was a period of about a week when she wouldn't sleep at all, and then it was back to 2 1/2 to 3 hour periods. I have started her on mashed veggies and rice cereal, and that seems to help a bit, so we're now back to 2 feedings a night. I think she's just hungry and needs more than breastmilk now.

Both mine sleep threw the night and by 2 and a half months both them were sleeping threw the night, my youngest is 4 and a half months, he sometimes wakes threw the night, and i just deal with it give him his bottle and he goes back to bed, he goes to bed anywhere from 8-1030 and sleeps till usually around 9, with sometimes waking up at 530, sometimes he does this for a few night and then sleeeps threw the night again, my two year old does the same thing, usually she sleeps threw the night but sometimes she still wakes,
Someone told me to give them water at the night time feeding and they will stop waking for that feeding, I never tried it caause i have a hard time getting my kids to drink water during the day let alone at night, But hope he soon starts sleeping for you!!! Good luck:)

I give Olivia a feed at about 9pm and let her have a quick play wrap her up now in one of her sheets because she is a big girl and could unwrap herself. She has white noise going all night and sleeps from around 10pm through to 6-7am she has been doing than now for 2 months and she has only woken a few times during the night and will go back to sleep quickly with her dummy.

i have to agree with sindi lee. for the past week my 4month old has been sleeping for a bout 5 or 6hours at night&how much i loved it! now that the weekend has arrived,he went back to waking up every 2 or 3hours. i'm hoping that he'll go back to the 5/6hour stretch, but there's no way that i can make him 'cause i've tried just about every way(swaddling, feeding&changing right before bed, etc.) and he still wakes up whenever he feels necessary.

Gabe has slept through the night since he was about 2 months old. he goes to bed between 9 and 10 and doesn't wake until 8 or 9 in the morning. We make sure to give him a nice full meal, and then a warm bath every night before bed. I still swaddle him as part of our bedtime routine, but he usually "breaks free" through the night and I almost always find him unswaddled in the morning. I started to swaddle him at nap times, too, and I think it helps him to sleep better.

Our girl started sleeping ALL night since she was home from the hospital. Defantly by 4 weeks she was going 12 hours between the night feeding. When she grows she wakes once to feed anywhere from midnight - 3. She just went through that a few weeks back, slept all night for a day or two, then went back to waking at night. So we introduced solids, oatmeal cereal before bed and it's worked great. She still drinks 32 or more oz a day.

Have you tried oatmeal cereal before bed?

My daughter is four months and two weeks and I still swaddle her. I think it helps her to sleep better if she is tucked in tight. she started sleeping thru the might at two months old. she goes to sleep at 10pm and sleeps till 7:30 or 8am the next morning. does your son take good naps during the day? I've read that the better they nap during the day the better they will sleep at night.

I dont swaddle my 3 and a half month old, but I use these things called sleepy wings. They basically cover his arms and keep them secure in the up position while he sleeps. He can still move his arms, but not too much. And mine has just recently started waking for an extra feed during the night, so now I wake him about 11.30-12 before I go to bed, top him up and he sleeps till about 8 or 9!

Memphis still sleeps in his basinet next to my bed but he takes naps everywhere so if he falls asleep in his bouncer or swing before we go to bed we leave him and when we are ready for bed I change his diaper and make a bottle and try to feed him as we are getting in bed and that has helped us a lot! Ever since I started doig that he doesn't wake up until 4 or 5! I believe that is mostly becasue daddy gets up for work around 4 every morning and it wakes him but he goes right back to sleep after he gets a bottle! sometimes he doesn't wake up until 6 or so! But on the nights he does wake up around 1 I give him his paci and he goes right back to sleep! There have been very few time where he did sleep completely through the night and didn't wake until 7 or 8 though!

Sounds like he's taking a spurt! Mine was pretty much sleeping through the night, he'd wake around 5 and then feed and go back till 9!!!! It was wonderful :) He now wakes at 3am and feeds and goes back until 6:30 or 7, still good! They say 5hrs straight through is sleeping through the night for a small baby. My 2nd son didn't sleep through the night until he was near two, it was awful lol. There's no tricks, they will sleep through when they are ready! Good Luck :)
