Hi, I was wondering if anyone else was running into their little ones sweat smelling like vinegar when it dries. It's very prominent and no matter how many times I bath her, wipe her down with a baby wipe, put lotion on her, it never goes away! I don't know if it has anything to do with her only being able to tolerate soy. Has anyone else run into their baby's sweat smelling like vinegar and what did it end up being? I've googled it, but most things say that its a diabetes symptom-thing but I just dont see how that can be possible in a 6 month old....any ideas would be great! I will be calling my ped to make sure nothings wrong I just want to make sure I dont worry too much

I have a 3 month old and im having the same problem. Its very prominent when she wakes....she sweats while she sleeps and I cant figure it out. Thought it was my breast milk, but if your children are formula or soy fed....then im lost too.

Hi. Did anyone check with a doctor that it wasn't diabetes related. My 5 yr old has the same thing. She has always been a sweaty sleeper and one morning she woke up smelling very vinegary.

Please help

when my baby was 0-4 months her sweat smelled like vinegar. then i stopped using any kind of talc powder or any other kind products with perfume or smells. now at 8 months shes a baby with no smells, even if i gave her talcum powder, lotion, or baby cologne, or any other fragrance. the smells just disappear. so the smells only came from her clothes. coz now she's a baby with no smells not even a baby smells. perhaps gv your baby a check to ped wont do harm. good luck

I don't want to sound racist but what ethnicity are you and your baby's father? The first thing that comes to my mind are how all different types of people smell different. My best friend in high school was polonesian and wow, I didn't think it would be that strong. She also put an odd perfume on her called SweetPea that stunk we told her to stop using it and she wouldn't. Nice girl but it made us giggle cuz it really didn't smell good :(

An article I found online is talking about diabetes giving off a vinegar smell due to the sugar imbalances? Maybe get her checked?

Ear infection.. but they are talking about vinegar smells from the mouth more so?

Dehydration is another one.. with diabetics they'll give off that smell when this happens?

Thrush?

here's a clip from another forum on the same question:
it can be related to an overgrowth of yeast in the body/system/bowel, etc. This can be helped by adding digestive enzymes & a probiotic (baby acidophilus) to the child's diet. Both of these things can be purchased in powder form and given in a bottle mixed with a fluid. It is also recommended to cut out sugars. other people said that it could also be dehydration, an ear infection (or illness) or some type of food intolerance. (new formula? something mom ate if breast feeding? new food?) good luck.

Could be an allergy to dairy? is she eating any new foods? do you formula feed her? Maybe try formula without the milk in it? Asodophilis or whatever it is?

I'd have her checked by a standard pediatrican and if he doesn't see any signs of infection or anything, you can ask to have a diabetes test done just to make sure?

Umm... trying to bulk post random ideas and findings online as no one has helped ya yet :D sorry lol

This answer seems to be a fairly logical one and less alarming then diabetes regarding Usable proteins abundance in the baby which might lead to cause a reactionary Vinegar smell from the body when sweating. Increasing the water Ratio may dissipate the smell We're helping the body to process easier. A more serious result might be from the body's inability to break down proteins, However you might notice this situation would also cause a diff regulation with bowel movements. It's seriously concerned, I would have this checked.

I have read a lot into this and the biggest reasons given have been: ear infection, cold, asthma, allergies, and reflux...my brother had silent acid reflux and was on nutramigen and all of his symptoms went away...my 5 m/o DD has been smelling of vinegar and has been having what I think is reflux problems, but she is also teething so I am going to give the doctor a call in the morning just to see if he thinks its something I should check out right away.

My nephew (now 13 months old) had to drink nutramagin(sp) and he always smelle strange. His mom would bathe him and put lotion on him and he always smelled the same. He smells better now that he is off the formula, but I understand "the smell"!

Well, her daddy n I are both Caucasian so I don't think that may be the problem...it's not thrush or an ear infection cause I just had her checked and she was good...

It might be the sugar imbalance/diabetes thing so I'll definitely have to get her checked for that... It can't be her formula since she's been on soy since she was 2 months old...I'll definitely check with my ped and see what's goin on...maybe she has an idea about why her sweat smells like vinegar...
