My son is not a huge finger food eater either. He still does a lot of gagging with even the lumpier pureed foods. How does your son do with cheerios or those little puffs? They should help some with his fine motor skills. My son is a week away from 10 months old, but he's only recently even started feeding himself a cracker.

Side note: Eggs are a common allergen to babies so I would talk to your pediatrician prior to giving him egg whites.

I'm having the opposite problem! My son only wants to feed himself. We started with big puffy baby foods for finger feeding because they were earlier to pick up. Once he seemed to master that, we moved to real fruits and vegetables. These are slimy and of course a huge mess, but he loves feeding himself. He still misses his mouth, especially with slimy foods like banana and nectarine. He does great with sweet potato. If your baby has a food preference, like sweet potatoes for example, start with those same solids....that way you know he will like them and want to eat them.

If you're son likes Gerber or other puréed foods, try mashing the egg and putting it in that. My baby is 9months old and she still has a hard time self feeding too. It's ok just keep trying. Letting your baby play with toys that involve grasping smaller objects would be something good to do. Every baby is different. I have four children, I can attest for that!
