My Son has had his library card since 6 months of age. Our library doesn't charge for him to have his own card until he's 18 and I am able to use it for books I want to borrow as well. We've gotten to read many different stories this way because I'm more likely to pick up a book I'm not 100% sure on without debating the cost.
As well books for garage sales, thrift stores, ect are wonderful! For $5.00 I got "The Dangerous Book for Boys' in brand new condition which is still selling for $40.00 new! For the $20.99 you would spend on one brand new book you can buy 30 used ones in most cases!
If you borrow a book from the library you absolutely love and must own I recomend placing a want ad on a free listings site like Kijiji. That way you can get that prized book for a little less 2nd hand!
