Should talking on the cell phone be outlawed while driving? What about texting?

I wish everyone thought that way, Amanda. I had my son out for a walk this summer, he was in his stroller, we were crossing an intersection and clearly had the walk signal. This twit on a phone made a left hand turn and almost clipped my son's stroller. I called her every name in the book, her window was down and I guess she heard me because she pulled over and started to call me out for swearing in front of my son. It took every ounce of my strenght NOT to crawl through her window and choke the life out of her.

In ontario it isnt just cell phones outlawed, any hand held device, Ipods, GPS's, Cell phones, they dont even have to prove you were using it, just that it was in a hand (this applys at stop signs, and red lights). Cell phone use while driving is only legal in ontario if you are calling 911.
As for the people who cant/wont give up their cell phones in the car, think of it this way....
Is the phone call you are taking more important then your life? Someone elses life? Your childs life? Because if it is, go ahead and take your call, but if it isnt save a life, and leave your cell phone in the backseat!!
I hope one day, people will look at cell phone users in cars like they look at DUI's, because they are no different, addiction is addiction, no matter what the drug is.... txting, phone calls, booze or durgs.

Its banned in the UK not that anyone takes any notice. I heard on the radio last week a man got fined and had points on his licence for sneezing while driving. Thought that was funny, how can you stop yourself sneezing lol.

In the UK it is outlawed - if you're caught using a mobile either texting or calling and your car engine is on you get an automatic fine, yet it doesn't seem to make much difference - everyday I still see at least 5 people using their mobile whilst driving. Whilst someone who lives in the same region as me was fined for eating an apple whbilst driving!!! I think it's stupid using a phone whilst driving as it distracts your attention.

They don't just ticket and fine you here they also make you go to a 3 hour Saturday class about to learn about the dangers of texting and talking while driving.

I am too inept and juggling things to text or even talk and drive at the same time. I will not answer my phone when I am driving and I CANNOT stand when people talk and drive because 99% of the time they are holding up traffic, weeving around and in the dang way. Texting and driving is so dangerous and stupid. I live on a military installation and both are illegal. As soon as you come on the installation there is a big sign that says NO CELL USE WHILE OPERATING VEHICLES...WILL BE FINED IF VIOLATED.

Dana, I'm in Kelowna, BC.
I'm not a big sports fan so I won't be watching anything but the opening and closing ceremony and if I see them showing our province on other country's channels. I'm always interested to see how we are portrayed in the world. Hopefully our RCMP can keep the tasers holstered while the world is visiting lol.

I'm in Ontario , Canada and it's been outlawed here. And I'm glad it has been. I've been in too many close calls, both as a motorist and a pedestrian. I know it won't stop some people from doing it but at least it's a start.

People know not to drink and drive. It doesn't stop them. I think it will be the same with cell phones. I would stop, because I'm a dork whose scared of getting a ticket. But outlawing talking on the phone would not stop people from doing it, just like DUI's don't stop people from drinkng and driving.

A study was done here that showed that texting while driving was worse than drunk driving. The likelihood of a crash was increased greatly while texting and was more of a risk than drunk driving. It seems so common knowledge to not drink and drive but most don't know that it's even more dangerous to text and drive.

It's outlawed in Australia, in most if not all states, as it should be. There are some pretty stiff fines

Oh, and I'd like to add that texting is even more dangerous thant talking on the phone because you have to look down in some way to do it. So neither should be an option at all, and it should all be outlawed.

It is outlawed already where I live. But it doesn't stop people - they still do it all the time. One of the signs I see around is "It won't kill you to miss a phone call".
One day I was picking my son up from school. In the car in front of me at the pick up zone, were 2 kids getting in a car - their mother was on the phone, in a busy school car park, in the school pick up zone (where there were probably 300 kids ages 4-12), chatting on her mobile phone. Her children organised themselves into the car and off she went. Because I was right behind her, I noticed the back door wasn't closed properly. The little girl in there would have been maybe 5 or 6. As she went around the corner, the door swung open and the little girl nearly fell out, and this was while we were still in the car park. Mum was oblivious, and kept chatting. I started flashing my lights, and I tooted my horn. She glanced in her rearview mirror and ignored me.
As she took off up the road, the door of her car flew open and her daughter looked like she was hanging on by the skin of her fingernails. I didn't get her registration number, unfortunately, or I would have called the police there and then. I am disgusted at her use of the cell phone - she endangered her children when all she had to do was pull over, deal with the phone call, and then go on her way. There is no phone call so important that I would risk the possible accidents it could cause. I have a message service. If it is that important, they will leave a message or ring back.

They are both outlawed in the UK thankfully as is eating or doing anything else while behind the wheel and I completly agree. The car is a dangerous thing and driving takes all your attention I don't know how anyone can concentrate properly if they are either on the phone or trying to write a text message.

A law just went into effect on the first of this month where I live that bans communicating without a hands free device http://www.theprovince.com/news/legislat... I fully support it. I'm a driver who likes to pay attention to driving and I appreciate the same from those around me.

No, talking on a cellphone in my opinion is fine, especially with bluetooth. Texting is obviously dangerous, and shouldnt be tolerated.

Texting while driving is also outlawed here. But not talking. I do a lot of catching up in the car...lol. Maybe it should be outlawed. It would probably be the only way many of us would stop talking on the phone while driving.

Did anyone see Opera when she discussed texting and talkin on the phone while driving? She had experts talking and showing people what it does to people and their brains!! Did you know ur 4X more likely to get in an accident if ur texting than if you were impaired or driving under the influence? Anyhow, I live in British Columbia, Canada and it's already against the law here and I'm glad!

Texting is already against the law where I live. I'm not sure if it is state wide although I'm pretty sure it is.
I had heard that they were trying to do away with cell phone use unless it was on a hands-free device.
I honestly can't give up my cell phone while driving. Well... I'm sure I could but I'd have a hard time doing it. lol. The roads would be much safer if people were not able to use their cell phones for calls or texting though so I very much support both issues being banned.

YES!!! Both. I can't tell you how many times I've had a close call because of this. Michigan is working on outlawing both right now.
