For a while it was considered bad to have more than a cup, then it was okay, then bad. Now there are studies saying that coffee is actually GOOD for you.......what have you heard? What do you think?

I never really liked coffee but I never quit drinking caffeinated drinks while I was pregnant. I didn't drink energy drinks but I drank tea and had soda. A lot of what good and whats bad for you while you are pregnant changes with each study or new found research. Same thing with kids. @ Toni, you feel ill when you try to drink coffee while pregnant? Before I knew I was pregnant I went out to have a few beers with friends, after taking a few sips I just couldn't stomach it and lost the taste for it, the same thing with soda the next day. I guess your body will tell you what it needs and doesn't need sometimes.

That's what i don't understand, why decaf? the decaffeination process is worse for you than having caffeine from what i've read. I'll take my one cup a day, thanks

The dangers of methylene chloride decaffeination are widely debated: the World Health Organization found the main toxic effects of the chemical itself (without evaluating the decaffeination process) to be reversible central nervous system depression and carboxyhaemaglobin formation. Additional effects reported were liver and renal dysfunctions, hematological effects, and neurophysiological and neurobehavioral disturbances. (The WHO Environmental Health Criteria Series, volume 164.)

i feel limiting drugs during pregnancy is a good idea. now completely getting rid of them i didn't do, i find that a bit too much, but i had my pop a day, sometimes less. i don't do coffee, eeewww! everything in moderation is the key for me!

I didn't drink much ( I was sick the whole 9 months) but I did have probably two cups a week.... then I nursed and had the usual one a day (max 2). I
ts kind of like the whole "put the baby on its belly/ put the baby on its back (to sleep)" debate. It will always be on going and one year it'll be one way the next it'll be another way.

i have max 2 per day. I was lucky cos when i started having morning sickness i got completely turned off coffee so was never an issue (except for the withdrawal symptoms)

I don't drink coffee, never have, but my hubby does-maybe a cup or 2 a day. However, we drink tea like crazy! His is sweet, mine's unsweet. It didn't seem to have any side effects on my son and the Dr wasn't/isn't concerned. I MIGHT have 1/2 can of soda a day, but usually it's either milk, water, tea-or ice lol.

When I googled "Coffee benefits during pregnancy". the first 3 links were talking about how you need to cut back, the next is below-it's wikipedia so idk how much to trust it, but it's something:

I still heard (and was told) to limit the amount of caffeine. I had my fair share, but I always tried to limit it,a few cups of coffee a day is what I had my limit set to, although many days I went decaf.

Ugh. MSG is my arch-nemesis. That and aspartame. Oh, and FD & C red dye 40. We don't work well together.

MSG isn't good for you either, but I sure had some Chinese food this pregnancy. With my daughter and son, if I was near coffee, I wanted to hurl. This pregnancy, I really really want some coffee. I'm not overdoing it. My coffee pot only makes 3 - 6oz cups. lol. But, I'm still trying to figure out why the lady was taking it FOR health benefits. Wondered if it was some thing like how chocolate is good for you because of antioxidants or something. I alternate tea and coffee, but my tea doesn't have caffeine. I just love something warm on cold mornings. I don't drink pop. Rarely - even when not pregnant. Sometimes at restaurants I'd rather have that than their tap water or apple juice, since that is all most carry is pops. I thought decaf was worse for you because of how it was processed compared to regular coffee?

i heard vitamin waters even have some caffeine in them.

wow, melissa, no chocolate during pregnancy?? I couldn't have made it with no chocolate my first two pregnancies, this one, i don't want any, though.

I did not drink coffee or pop during my pregnancy because it contains caffeine and caffeine is a drug. :)

Coffee IS good for you. I firmly believe that.

I drank coffee through my entire pregnancy, every day, multiple cups. Now, I'm an avid coffee drinker, have been since I was 15 ish. Always black, always in large quantities. Your body adjusts to these things over time. My body did so, a long time ago. If this were not the case and some of coffee's negative effects were apparent in my body, like temporary spikes in blood pressure, increased heart rate, jitters, etc, I may have avoided coffee. I certainly wouldn't have started drinking coffee during my pregnancy, or recommend that. If there had ever been any concern over his development, his heart rate, etc, I may have considered giving it up, or at the very least cutting back. My doctor was never slightly concerned.

Anyway, If that kid wanted to be born at all that meant I needed to get my ass up and get to work 40+ hours per week to pay for the doctor and all the crap he needed once he was born. To get to (and through) work, and not end up fired, I needed my freakin' coffee.

I don't normally drink coffee but when pregnant i crave it. With all 3 pregnancies i have craved it so bad that i couldn't function properly with out it but as soon and i mean with in hours of them being born i no longer had that craving.

I gave up all caffeine during pregnancy, which was easy because I barely drink any at all. No coffee, occassionally hot tea, and rarely soda. I gave it up because it made me jittery.
I find it hard to believe researchers any more. They contradict themselves every year. Next year coffee will cause cancer, then the year after it will reduce your chances of getting it....who knows what to believe.

I stopped drinking coffee during pregnancy , caffine is a drug one that highly stimulates me so I figure if it is doing it to me it is ten times worse for baby so I just gave it up but now , pregnancy free I am back on the bean !

Now research is showing that moderate alcohol use isn't harmful either.

I agree...they do need to make up their minds :)

I drank my coffee and continued to dye my hair all throughout the pregnancy...well up to the 36 week delivery. I tried mixing decaf w/regular, but still had my 4 cup travel mug every morning. Plus the occassional afternoon cup of coffee. No issues, healthy baby-just early.

What the hell! I wasn't allowed to have coffee during my entire pregnancy (total coffee fanatic here) and it just made me so miserable! They need to make up their minds!

I think the health benefit is mom not being exhausted, IMHO! I couldn't make it through pregnancy without some caffeine.

I've heard you should keep it below 300 mg of caffeine, which I think is 1 -2 cups of coffee (depending on the size of the cup). I only drink tea and I was told by my OB that up to 6 cups of tea per day was fine. I try to limit it to 3, but somedays (like today!), I have more.

I'm an absolute caffeine fiend so I had to cut back when I got pregnant. But cutting it out entirely was just miserable for me because of the withdrawals. :/

I believe all things should be in moderation. I don't think it'll cause severe harm to have a cup or two a day of it or another caffeine source. someone was saying they are drinking two cups a day specifically for the health benefits...I was just kinda wondering what they were. It was overheard in the waiting room for my OB appointment. I thought about asking her what she was talking about, but I got called in for my appointment.

too much caffeine can cause the placenta to calcify, preventing the baby from receiving the proper nutrition. It can put a strain on the babies heart as well. Less than 200mg a day is supposedly ok when pregnant. Thats about an xl coffee. Caffeine can cause bad effects when abused, everything in moderation.

I limit myself to one cup a day. I love my coffee. A little bit of caffeine has always been good for you. Moderation is key.

I have heard a cup or two is ok, but where possible we should try to limit our caffeine intake because it increases the babies heartrate, the things I have been told to limit due to caffeine include coffee, tea, chocolate and cola drinks.

After having my son I really began enjoying a nice cup of coffee, but since being pregnant again the smell makes me feel ill, I guess the baby doesn't want me to drink it lol.
