New research suggests that delaying weaning our babies until 6 months or later may be harming their health, it is suggested that babies should begin to be weaned from around 4 months old.

So what do you guys think?

I am going to lock this thread because although I did check before I posted, I missed another thread about the same research, so to stop us having two identical threadsI will close this one, we can carry on, on the other thread - sorry I promise I'll pay more attention in future :-).

Julianne it is saying EXCLUSIVE BF, so only giving your child milk could be harmful to them, they need food earlier than 6 months according to the article. I never said you should stop giving milk at 4 months that is why I put 'begin to be weaned', it is still really important to a babies diet, my son is weaned onto solids yet he still has milk as well....

Recommendations are an average too. On average a child should start around 6 months, we all know from the way children develop that we all grow differently. I started gabby out on solids at 5 months because that is when she was ready. Its child based.

That is ridiculous. its not saying stop giving breast milk AT 4 months. Is about starting to eat FOOD around then instead of 6 months....absolutely nothing to do with continuing breastfeeding. This article is not saying Breastfeeding past 4 months is bad, its about solids..

i've felt that this is the truth for a long time now. it makes sense to me that holding off introducing food would cause allergies.
i think there needs to be common sense with it though. if your baby isn't interested don't start. it boggles me how people take recommendations like this and take it as the gospel. common sense goes a long way!! :)

That's what we did Kate, Ethan was sitting unaided at 3 months, and was showing interest in our foods at 3 1/2, at which point I spoke to my health visitor because along with this Ethan was eating 8x 9oz bottles a day, she agreed along with the doctor that as long as he was happy we should begin weaning him. We only gave him tiny tasters to try at first but he loved it, I have been condemned by mums for weaning early but I know it was what Ethan wanted and was ready for :-)

I still think parents should follow their kids' leads when it comes to starting solids. If they are sitting up unassisted, are acting interested in your food, and don't have that tongue thrust reaction to solids then it's time to start solids.

I think in five years someone will come up with a new study about this that will contradict everything, yet again.

I delayed solids until six months. My kid didn't act interested in food too much until now. And she's eleven months old.
