Fluoridation has been with us for nearly 50 years, but the debate over the wisdom of adding trace amounts of a chemical to municipal water supplies to prevent dental cavities never seems to stop.

Paul Connett, a U.S. academic and public-health advocate, is the leading international spokesman for the movement to stop fluoridation. Along with co-writers James Beck and H.S. Micklem, he has just penned a book, The Case Against Fluoride, decrying the practice.

In Canada, British Columbia, Quebec and Newfoundland have almost no fluoridation. But residents of other provinces served by municipal systems are probably drinking fluoridated water. While fluoridation is common in Canada, the United States and Australia, it’s practically not-existent in Europe and the rest of the world. Health Canada is a strong promoter of fluoridation, as are most dental associations, which say it’s a safe, low-cost way to prevent tooth decay, particularly among cavity-prone children.

But Dr. Connett, executive director of the Fluoride Action Network and professor emeritus of chemistry at St. Lawrence University in New York, disagrees. For his reasons, read on.

Before you became involved in this issue, you were skeptical that fluoride was harmful and thought critics of the practice were misguided. What changed your mind?

There were two things. The first was that fluoride interfered with hydrogen bonds, which are common in proteins and other important molecules in our bodies. That sent alarm bells ringing through my head. The second was that the level in mothers’ milk was incredibly low. When you see what nature’s take on it is, which is don’t give the baby much fluoride, then I felt this doesn’t make any sense to add it to water.

In the case of fluoridation, the water supply is being used as a drug-delivery mechanism to treat a medical condition. Why is this wrong, in your view?

It violates people’s right to informed consent, which has always been the strongest argument against fluoridation. We’ve never done it with other drugs. Since fluoridation began in 1945, not one other substance has been added to the water to address a health concern. You shouldn’t use the water supply to deliver medication, for obvious reasons. You can’t control the dose. You can’t control who will get it. There is no individual supervision. The whole practice doesn’t make sense from a medical point of view.

Tooth-decay rates have fallen at similar rates in advanced countries around the world, irrespective of whether the jurisdiction fluoridates. What is driving the trend?

One factor is the increasing standard of living. There is a much stronger relationship between falling tooth-decay rates and rising income levels than you’ll ever find with anything else. With higher incomes, you get better diets, you have parents with time to control their children’s diet and to look after their dental hygiene. Although I’m not promoting fluoridated toothpaste, it’s another possibility. Research has found that the benefits from fluoride are from topical applications, and not from ingesting it by swallowing it. Other factors might be the use of more antibiotics or preservatives in food. These might be altering or controlling the bacteria in our mouths that cause decay. But I don’t think anybody is absolutely convinced they know the reason.

Do you brush with a fluoridated toothpaste?

I haven’t brushed with a fluoridated toothpaste for 14 years. My teeth are fine.

The first U.S. fluoridation trial began in the mid-1940s. Would fluoridation pass a modern, drug-style clinical trial or risk assessment?

There is no way on planet Earth that you could get fluoridation through today. It’s only because it’s been an inherited practice and so much credibility is at stake for the medical community that keeps it going.

What are the health dangers from fluoridation?

I think we’re going to pay a huge price. I’m convinced, based on animal studies, clinical trials and epidemiological studies, that drinking fluoridated water for a whole lifetime will increase your risk of arthritis and also increase your risk of hip fractures, which is very serious in the elderly. The reason for these problems is that half the fluoride people ingest is stored in the bone. We may also have a problem with it lowering the IQ of children. There are 23 studies from four countries that have found a possible association between drinking naturally fluoridated water and lower IQ in children.

Does your city add fluoride to the water? Do you think it should stop? Why or why not?

Right now, our town has Fluoride in the water and I am trying to become educated enough to persuade them to take it out. The adverse effects of Fluorine are astonishing to say the least. Why is it that we cant find a cure for cancer? That is because the fluorde in our water causes the cancer. Water is free, accessible to everyone, and what better way to lower the nations IQ, cause deaths and kill people to control population? Fluoride calcifies the pineal gland, which is our third eye. Once calcified, it becomes dormant and doesnt produce the hormones that it once did, plus it doesnt release the enzymes that it did which are essential for all body systems to function properly. Fluoride is bad stuff and we need to fight against it!

Yes my town adds Fluoride to our water. I am thrilled and thankful that they do. This way I don't need to give my children Fluoride tablets. It is such a blessing to have extra help with preventative dental care.

Fluoride ON teeth (toothpaste, the rinse they give you at the dentist) fabulous! All for it. Fluoride consumption (in drinking water) no no no no.

The ridiculous thing, my son's pediatrician actually recommended that I give switch his tri-vitamins with ones that have a fluoride supplement in them . Ya, no thanks.

I for one am sick and tired of those in control making decisions for me!Government, politions or health organizations.Give me a choice,or get out of the way. I have never lived in a city that didn't flouridate the water supply. I really don't have answer for this I only know when others decide whats best the general population we're on a slippery slope towards losing the right to make our OWN decisions.

Too much fluoride could harm you...too much water can kill you too. Anything in mass quantities could be potentially harmful. I would rather have the fluoride in the water and use my filter for drinking water...it gets rid of the "acceptable" levels of arsenic, lead, and other bad stuff allowed in the water too. At least the fluoride serves a purpose. I will say this, brushing with fluoride toothpaste and using a rinse is more effective than having it in the water. It does protect your teeth and help prevent cavities, but you shouldn't swallow it even in small amounts. There are far scarier things in your water than fluoride...and you'll never hear about those. *evil laugh* ;)

I just looked it up... looks like Montreal is free of fluoride! I had no idea there was a debate about this. I'm so glad to be in the know...

"I didn't know that Torontonians have double the fluoride levels in hip bones than Montrealers whose city water is not fluoridated. Studies also show that fluoride causes decreased levels of sperm and testosterone. I wonder if that explains the rumour that they make love in Montreal while Torontonians only think about making money. "

And here's a troubling story:
"William, a three year old Brooklyn boy, had his first dental checkup in 1974. Fluoride gel was spread over his teeth. Following that he was handed a glass of water by the dental hygienist who failed to inform him to swish the solution in his mouth and spit it out. Instead, he drank the water and a few hours later he was dead from fluoride poisoning. Fluoride is an acute toxin with a rating higher than lead. "

We have a well and then a purifying system on our water supply as well as a water softener which cuts down on our soap use in the dishwasher, washing machine, and shower.

I'm for personal responsibility. In other words, always clean whatever your water supply is before consuming it.

Working in construction i see what is on the inside of water supply lines going to drinking fountains and other potable water supply systems and it is disgusting.

Honestly, Fluoride is the least of anyone's concern.

I live in the UK and in most areas it is added to the water. I use a flouride toothpaste and tbh I don't see what the hoohaa is about. My son uses milkteeth which has less flouride than standard toothpaste and is aimed at 0-3 year olds.

we have fluoride in our water and i am allergic to it, i cant have a long bath because my skin get really blotchy and itchy and starts peeling (yes disgusting) so i have to have quick baths and get in and out as quick as possible. I think if people just brush their teeth they wouldn't have so many problems. I do hope they stop putting it in our water, i would like a nice long bath lol

Our city flouridates, and we brush our teeth with flouride toothpaste and the tap water. We have a filter system for drinking water that filters out the flouride that we use. I actually had a doctor tell me that I should have my daughter DRINK the flouridated water when she found out that we don't consume it! I said no thank-you, we're fine. To date, my 12 year old has never had a cavity! I chalk it up to several reasons, and flouride in the water isn't the the top reason. I say it's time to end the practice.

I am not comfortable with it, especially sinc eit can be applied topically. Our city does it but there are talks about stopping it. I hope they do.

We don't have flouride in our water. I'm not comfortable w/ it (the flouride, that is.. I'm fine w/ it not being in the water).
